Car
2020 Honda HR-V 1.6i DTEC EX (Mine) 2011 FIAT Panda Dynamic 1.3.. (Hers)
s some will know I have replaced the mighty S205 C250d with a Honda HR-V Ex. After telling all and sundry that I would never have a black car, guess what!
Unfortunately the paintwork has seen too many Baltic car washes and is covered in swirls and light scratches. At some time I will be looking to have it machine polished but in the interim I would like to try and improve it.
What are the recommendations from you detailers? I am a complete numpty so any help is welcome and appreciated.

When i had my Obsidian CLS the best polish i used , at the time , was Poor Boys - Black Hole as it seemed to hide a few of the paintwork swirls applied by the previous owner.

Maybe things have moved on since but vowing never to have a black car again i was not in a position to find out.

As others have said, Poor Boys Black Hole is a good option to mask some of the swirls and scratching, but the only solution that will last is to have paint correction carried out.

When I bought my Obsidian Black E63 I took a punt because the paintwork looked like the car had been cleaned with a yard broom. I had a full paint correction detail done on it complete with ceramic coating and it still looked superb when I sold it two-and-a-bit years later. Based on that experience, I'd strongly advise a ceramic coating as well as paint correction as it makes the finish more durable and easier to keep looking good.

I would go with that. I used to have a VW Toureg that was badly swirled. I had that paint corrected and ceramic sealed, and it was fantastic.

thanks for the replies and advice which I will take.
A supplementary question, does anyone know of anywhere within reasonable distance of Skegvegas that does paint correction?

Whatever you do DON'T use a light coloured wax paste on the car, I did and you then spend the following year getting the white dust residue from all the joints and gaps between panels around the car. +1 for poor boys black hole

I've just bought poorboys black hole will try it at the weekend ive also got this as the light colour 1 was brilliant

Following the advice I acquired some Black Hole. I tried a couple of panels in between rain storms and was very impressed. Swirls are much reduced but some scratches still remain.A good shout guys!

Nothing beats a 2 stage correction on metallic black paint.. on your Honda the paint should be soft compared to MB paint so even a 1 stage polish with a good AIO and Dual action polisher should get good results..

Unfortunately it is solid black, or maybe fortunately? It certainly looks very "deep" when polished.

I would still go for an all in one polish applied by dual action polisher

ive owned several black cars and they look amazing when freshly detailed.. but it lasts a few hours before a thin layer of dust builds up. sigh!

my first recommendation is use a 2 bucket method to wash to minimise adding any more swirls. to hide the swirls for now, what i would do is wash the car using the 2 bucket method with decent shampoo and mitt. clay the car to remove any stuck on contaminates. polish the car by hand using auto glym super resin polish. thin layer, let it dry and buff off. SRP has got fillers in that will mask alot of the swirls. you might need to do this twice. SRP wont last long so on top of that add a wax. a synthetic wax that i love on a black car is chemicals pete's 53. car looks amazing and 'wet' with that wax. you'd get a crisper shine using this. but this wax IMO will last about 1-2 months max. i usually use this type of wax in summer especially if im going to shows. all other times i like to use a natural wax like dodo juice supernatural or blue velvet. really nice easy wax to use. you get a 'warmer' shine which isnt as crisp as the synthetic wax but will last about 6 months. currently got this on my black impreza and water is still beading off during a wash 4 months on.

I managed to find a local-ish place that could do machine polish and ceramic coating. They are a retailer of expensive sports cars. They looked at the car and came up with a quote of .........£at least £700.
They could not take on board that I found that a lot of money to spend on a little H-RV costing a tenth of the hardware in their showroom and forecourt.
Still looking.

To be honest for a machine polish and ceramic coat that price of £700 sounds about right. Another option maybe to go to a local bodyshop and see how much to just machine polish the car and do the ceramic coating yourself, or buy a DA, pads, polish and ceramic coating and do it yourself - probably £250 for all the stuff, take you all weekend and you will then see the results of your hard work in the reflections of your car. You can then use the gear on any other cars you get.

I wouldn't even attempt ceramic coating a car how would it cure most folk haven't got the equipment, but ive got to admit my mrs thinks my price is alot for (as she calls it) a posh clean🙂

Mine went in today ,will look 10/10 when I get it back
