 I have a low mileage 2001 CLK320 cabriolet. The cats are rattling and I need to replace both. I have 2 questions:

Firstly I have seem some comment that they are not necessary (to meet MOT emissions) and that they can be romoved totally or at least the innards. Is this Kosher?? IF so who should do it.

Secondly if I need to replace, can anyone recommend a reliable source / Manufacturer of non MB original parts. An independant exhaust Co has offered to fit for £60/70.

Hope someone can advise

Thanks

I certainly don't think that your car would meet MOT emissions standards come MOT time if the cats are removed!

Try GSF/Euro Car Parts for replacements and, just for fun, contact your local MB stealer parts dept for a quote too!

Hi,
I believe the V6 and V8 Mercedes engine have 4 CATS not 2, I suspect the ones that are rattling on your car are the lower ones, apparently the lower ones can be removed and the car will still pass the MOT emissions, though this is only what I have read. Maybe someone can confirm this.

Dont know if its any help - i was looking for replacement cats and came across a company on Ebay who do a sports cat for the same price as an OE replacement part - you definately need a cat for your emissions! Another thought is to take your old cat with you as these contain valuable metals which your local scrap merchant will pay you for :)

I had a rattling cat on my s-class first the drivers side started to rattle so I just replaced the whole lot, few 100 miles the passenger side started I was annoyed being short of £320 just for one side. So this time I took it off smashed the lower cat and the cars been fine passed the MOT twice. I think the lower cat is for the US market as there emissions test is harder to pass, the lower cat has no sensors after it so there is no check engine light hope this info helps?

try these guys they got better prices then euros and gsf also come with free delivery and fitting kits. they have a better fitting aswel

I had a cat problem with my S320, MB dealer quoted me £1970 + vat, nearly fell over, i found one online, (catman) and got one for £180 and fitted for £60 job done, although im ***** it dosnt sound the same. i thought about running a pipe through but the tests are there to check for that.
