After an uneven struggle with many problems on my 2 year old HP DV9088ea laptop, I have succumbed and ordered a new Dell laptop.

If my old HP laptop has any dodgy files/registry/software/system settings can I mess up the new machine by performing a wholesale transfer to the new machine.

Any advice or associated ideas would be most helpful.

Many Thanks.

Paul.

Why would you want to transfer registry files? Surely all software would be a fresh install and the files that you transfer would be just data files.

Hope you got the free windows 7 upgrade with your new Dell. Which model did you go for?

As crockers says, you don't need all the system files, just your personal data files, most likely found in 'My Documents'

How many GB of data are there?

I didn't know if any of the reg files would go accross when I transferred.
I ordered an easy pc transfer (cable, I think) with the system. I do have a lot stored already on my 500gb external drive and it may just be a case of going via that drive.

XP at present and new machine has Vista.

I nearly went for a Sony Vaio but had problems getting parts for one 5 years ago and having read other laptop threads thought the Dell was the safest option with the 4 year on site cover.

I'll probably have the HP repaired and serviced by a guy recommended by Frank O'Phile when I get the chance.

I wasn't aware of windows 7?

Many Thankls Guys. :thumb:

Just copy your docs and media to the external drive then copy back to the new machine. At least you have access to both machines and you can copy the data - this makes it a lot easier! :)

Personally I'd have optioned windows 7 or waited until it was an option. You might be able to get them to do this for you if it's not too late.

Thanks Shude. I'll ask the question although I am not sure quite what windows 7 is all about.

Should I be taking such a new windows software without letting everyone else Guinea-pig it first?

I bought a Studio 17 6 months ago and I'm very happy with it.

The only critisisms I personally have is I'm not keen on the touch sensitive buttons for the media malarky above the keyboard as I keep starting things by accident and the mousepad finger thingy is not nice to use but as I bought a nice plum coloured matching mouse this isnt an issue.

Oh and this is not really a laptop as such, more a desktop replacement..it's a bit bulky and heavy if it's going to be used as a true laptop....(I bought it as a desktop replacement).

Same problem with my existing HP.

Since you have bought 'Genuine Windows Vista® SP1 Home Premium (64 BIT) - English' then AKAIK you are entitled to upgrade the OS to Windows 7.

Although a pro-HP person, I wouldn't touch the DV's or any of the home user range from pretty much any main manufactutrer. They are designed and built to a budget and to last 2-3yrs if you're lucky.

Regarding the files transfer, as mentioned by many people already, the new laptop should have all the software/applications installed, and all youwould need to do it copy your existing files to an external hard disk. The transfer it to the new laptop.

NOTE: Before transferring the files to your new system, connect it and run a virus check on your external hard disk before copying the files over to the new laptop.

Once that is done, blow away your old laptop and rebuild it!
