I recently bought a new E300e (hybrid) and on the whole I'm very pleased with it. However, I seem to have a serious problem with it - after driving10 or more mile in petrol mode, we can smell exhaust fumes in the cabin and this gets worse if a window is opened. After driving, the engine bay is very hot (the plastic engine cover is too hot to touch, and the smell of exhaust is very strong.
I'll be talking to the dealer about this, but has anyone got an idea of cause, and the best way of approaching the dealer.
We've only had the car for a month, but didn't drive much the first few weeks as was laid up with Covid-type flu. :(

Thanks in advance for ideas :)

It's under warranty and up to the dealer to sort the problem out. I'd be taking it straight back.

Take it back to the dealer immediately.

Only drive it with the windows wide open and the vents closed

Carbon monoxide / Exhaust fumes in the cabin will make you dizzy and quietly kill you

The exhaust pipe may be leaking, or engine oil may be leaking on the exhaust pipe and what you're smelling is actually burnt oil.

Either way, back to the dealer ASAP.....

Thanks for the replies - I've asked for a meeting to sort it out.
I just hope that the heat in the engine bay hasn't melted anything . . .

If it’s that bad I’d be calling Mobilo and get them to pick it up/drop off a loaner?

Outcome: after a lengthy discussion with various heads of service, all telling me that it was normal and the bad smell would go away after 1000 miles  , I told them to fix it or keep their car.
I must admit though, that the 'chef d'atelier' then gave the car a thorough inspection (smoke tested the exhaust, etc), we found that a fat seal between the engine and the cabin air filter was not correctly fitted. Sorted by adding sealing tape where necessary.

The smell itself seems to have come from plastic stickers on the catalyser and the exhaust which were burning off.

Happy now, but a shame that you have to stamp your foot to get an obvious problem sorted.

That rather sounds like a bodge to me.
Surely it would be better to get a new "fat seal" and fit it correctly ... as per the design specification.
