I have just completed a oil service on my vehicle and could do with sime peace of mind please. The service manual states that the oil needed is 5.5 litres.I added 5.5 litres of Mobil 1 started the engine for a few minutes and then let it stand for about 5 mins. When checking the dipstick it shows the oil level at about 3/4.Is this ok or do I need to fill it to oil max level as per the dipstick?

The level is just right, overfilling the oil is as bad as under-filling it, you are well above the minimum and have a good margin below the maximum.

Slightly below max when warm is ideal.

3/4 sounds close (if warm)

Thanks everyone for the advise .you learn something everyday !

Is your driveway fairly flat? I always have to take my car on the road to check my oil... There is a slight slope to my driveway.

Thought the same and pulled car on road, still showing the same

Pet gripe of mine. Folks overfilling car engines with oil.
Rule 1 there is always some oil left in an engine no matter how its drained ----by gravity or vacuum aspiration.

Rule 2 If you fill the engine with the stated oil capacity of the engine under these circumstances you will overfill it

Rule 3 This will increase the chances of engine damage or system malfunction EGR or DPF contamination crankcase ventilation or seal leakage.

Rule 4 ALWAYS add less than the published capacity by a least a litre---- maybe more ----then after a suitable wait to alow the oil to reach the sump check level with a dipstick and top as necessary [ if you haven't got a dipstick - buy one! ]

Sadly I find the people most guilty of this are Mercedes Main dealers!

Also once you have run the engine up the oil filter will have been filled as well so probably explains the drop on the dip stick
