Advise on buying M-Class

I’ve had a few M class models.

I had a 2006 w164 320 Diesel which had one of the biggest problems I’ve ever had with any car, it had two new sets of crankshaft bearings fitted at about 30k and 40k miles.

Apparently a known problem with some of the 2006 engines. Car was out of warranty, but cost covered on both occasions by MB.

I remember that affecting V6 CDi W639s. The OM642 in the ML also had the (much rarer) issue with the exhaust manifold liners delaminating and wrecking the turbo - that happened to our W639 at 93k miles. Managed to get some goodwill discount (known issue, 1 owner vehicle with FMBSH), but it still cost me nearly £4k.

Ran an awesome ML420cdi for 2 years with no issues at all...maybe I was lucky...everything was big numbers, 4 litre V8 twin turbo top bracket tax...100 litre tank!....loved it though.
