Hi all
my first post.
had first test pilot drive in E320 cdi Avantguard estate 2day.
really really nice. :)
but.
what is best to go for?
220 or 270 cdi? its got to be an auto, lots of M6 driving
start-stop-start-stop-etc-etc
Only going to be doing around 70mph
as company pay 20p a mile 4 fuel.
any advice would be great.
thanks yawl

From memory the 270CDI has a great engine which isn't too much off the 320 mark. I am sure others will jump in and share their experiences. We have a couple of very happy E class owners here, some of them diesel.

The 270 is a great engine, not quite as refined as the 320 but very responsive and is a perfect match for the auto box. I can easily get 40mpg even with my heavy right foot, and at 70mph it would be nearer 50mpg. Short start-stop town journey's will be lower though.

The Avantgarde is also worth the extra for the Xenon's alone!

There have been some threads on this along the lines of should I go for a 270Cdi with toys or an E320Cdi without? I chose an E320Cdi because I do long journeys to the Alps with quite heavy loads, but a 270Cdi is perfectly adequate for what you describe.

That aside, you need to decide what you need/want, price both up & compare carefully. It is not a direct read across: for example E320Cdi comes with an auto box & parametric steering as standard whilst E270 Cdi does not, so you need to ensure you are comparing like for like

But if you have the budget for an E320Cdi you will be able to get yourself a very well kitted E270 Cdi.

Go for the E320CDI Avantgarde, you know it makes sense, apart from the CD player what else do you want?? :D :D

Just clocked that you actually asked if you should go for a 220 or a 270, not 270 versus a 320. You had a test drive in an E320Cdi Avantgarde Estate and we torque addicts latched on to that.

Answer is that a 220Cdi goes well enough but may feel a bit underpowered at times especially if loaded. The E270Cdi is by far the better proposition for an auto estate.
