My 17 yo daughter has just got her provisional licence, having got a quote for her on my old E240 of heaps, I thought that my wifes Ford Focus would be better, but she still ramps her premium from £390 to £2200 !!!!!!

Anyone know of any company at all that doesn't want the keys to my house for the cost of insurance ?????

Thanks all
Sean

They all seem to want you to just bend over and take it!!!

Biggest bunch of theives going....

We found Directline and Churchill by far the least costly for our daughters Mini 1.6 when she was 17. Next door neighbour has just insured a Focus 1.8 for their 17yr old son and 19 yr old daughter with Quinn direct for £1500. This was by far the best quote - the worst was £25000 for a £1500 car! No wonder so many dont bother with insurance at all when the fines are probably £100 or less.

There are companies (young marmalade iirc is one) who do 'add on' insurance, the cover just the learner and just for the time they are learning, as soon as they pass insurance is a whole new ball game and a company who is good for them as a learner might not be once they are qualified! Other than that try elephant/swift cover/swinton/diamond

Another learner driver insurer is Collingwood Learner.

Quinn is usually cheapest whilst learning to drive but usually doubles once you’ve passed. I've found Churchill/direct line the cheapest after you have passed.

Insured my 17 year old daughter on a Vauxhall Corsa last year, £800ish with Tesco insurance.

Make sure you or your wife are named drivers on the policy, its works out cheaper.

Insurance companies do matter, because their prices vary greatly, but what's more important is the car you're trying to insure.

Forget about insuring Mercs and BMWs, when you are 17. Even Audi and VW are quite pricy. So the main German cars go out of the window.

The cheapest stuff to insure are old French/Japanese cars with small engines, like Peugeot 306, Toyota Yaris, Honda Civic, etc.

Fiat Cinquecento (900cc, not Sporting) is group 1 insurance and will be about as cheap as it gets.

I agree with that Blackman, but we are talking about a bloody Focus with a poxy 1.4 engine! I've had pushbikes with more power !!!

Thanks for that guys, the best option looks like the "no insurance" option !

Its a sodding joke !

I can insure my E55 for £500 including my accident prone missus, why is it £2200 for my very sensible daughter. A scandalous rip off !

When I was 17 (and dinosaurs ruled the Earth) I was offered a 3.4 litre Mk 2 Jag very cheap (£35) by a friend of my mother. I went to General Accident, where my mum was insured, and asked for a quote. Security were called to remove me from the building.

On the other hand, at the same time I had a Norwich Union rider policy, letting me ride any motorbike up to 900cc, for £78. I don't think any money would buy a 17 year old cover like that today.

I didn't get any practice in a car other than my instructor's until I passed my test as both of my parents' cars were autos, meaning that practicing in either of them wasn't really worthwhile. After passing I was added to my parents' insurance on the A140 for just £330 extra per year with Cooperative insurance, and after a year with them I've started to earn my own no claims on that policy. I have my own car on which I am the main driver and it's £900 a year TPFT with Footman James, but it is a 1967 car, so insurance is a fair bit cheaper than it is on some cars.

I know what you mean, but have you thought about that Focus is a middle-class Ford? ;) It sounds silly, but these kind of things matter.

The cheapest Ford to insure would be Fiesta, because that's the lowest class Ford available. And remember that age matters too.

The question I keep asking is would it be cheaper to buy her a Cinquecento and get her on her own insurance (once shes passed her exams via a driving instructor)

Crazy. Utterly bonkers.

Wonder what the quote would be to get her on the E55 !

Hi roadie, you are probably right, just stick with the driving school, then get her a smaller car. just got my daughters first insurance in her own right on a Ford Ka, (She's 21) down from mortgage money to £380 fully comp with Admiral multi car, putting both my wife and myself down as occasional drivers brought it down by something like £400, makes no sense I know plus had the added bonus of reducing both my C240 and her Fiesta quotes, a win all round,
Good luck in doing battle with the sharks. PS don't rely on the interweb as your source of prices ring and barter.

I'm told by a friend who's a driving instructor that students who do lessons with their parents in addition to lessons with him often take more lessons to pass their tests and rarely pass first time due to picking up bad habits from their parents! Not sure if he's being 100% honest but it does kind of make sense.

Maybe thats the best route then, after all I learned to drive in Australia and I know what everyone says about foreign drivers ;-)

It is a complete rort though, isn't it ?

Better off using the insurance money on driving lessons with the instructor.

I agree though, insurance is a complete rip-off for yoots these days!
