hi all

I need to replace the front discs on my 2004 ml, looked at the national car parts dealership and they do not seem to have the OE listing anymore, as when I had my 124 everything to do with the brake department was ATE, discs, pads, cables ect, so I was thinking after trawling the net, of either Brembo or ECB discs and pads, anyone used either of these or is there a superior alternative, as I am a bit old school in the fact that for a merc I like soft pads so the discs last longer
thanks in advance

What do you have against ATE? It is OE quality, indeed on some models it is OE equipment.

nothing at all against ATE, used them for the 11 years 250000+ miles I had my 124 estate, they ATE were not listed when I searched for discs and pads for my ml, just textar and some others I have not heard of before.

It was just as cheap to get the discs and pads from MB, and get them fitted locally for my ML, than any other fast fit centre.

I think I paid less than £130 last year, for pads, paste and sensors all round for our W163 ML. That was from the local dealer.

I too have always trusted and used ATE , likewise noticed that ECP seem to be dropping them from their advertised stock .

Strangely , last time I looked on ATE website , they were still listing ECP as their main distributor in the UK .

I've never been quite so keen on Textar pads ( I know they are also OEM ) as they seem harder and the couple of times I've used them seem to accelerate disc wear .

I've always reckoned on buying ATE discs , and using their pads as they will be a good match as regards hardness etc .

As above , not a huge difference in price going to the dealership - just that you don't always know what you're getting until you break the seal on the blue & white box ...

Nothing wrong with ATE but I have just put Brembo discs on the CLK with Pagid Pro Pads and it's in a different league in terms of stopping power, massive difference. OEM brakes are usually a trade off of efficiency Vs Cost so often there is better out there. Brembo would be my first point of call:thumb:

Had new disks and pads on the front at around 45,000 - Olly fitted ATE - at last service pad wear was 50% - discs ok - 82,000. Only annoyance is the hubs rust up easily... but that can be cleaned off...

I painted the hubs the same time as the calipers to stop that problem as I agree it always looks unsightly :)

Discs are cheap from MB at the moment but Pads are not... buy them from euro car parts... ATE, Pagid, Textar, all good brands.

Ollys doing mine on Thursday. very very reasonable pricing.

I wouldnt use euro car parts myself and here is why;

They have about nine different levels of parts quality. you may well pay for a 1 and get a nine. they also remove all part numbers and re-part-number them so you cant go elsewhere and get them!

Try Camberley auto factors instead. They have own brand which are very good and branded with all the original part numbers left on.

Not sure about that mate, we spend thousands with them every week and I can assure you that if we ask for a particular brand, thats what we get!

They may push Pagid as they have a tie up, but Pagid are great quality IMO.

Even they dont like selling the cheaper quality stuff as it only gets returned.

That's cost effective then! I sure you don't sell stuff (no matter what the cost) if you know it's going to be returned, I certainly don't.

Euro is the largest supplier of parts in Europe... They have to stock a range suitable for every type of customer otherwise they wouldnt be the largest...
The sales staff will normally assess the requirements and advise from there.... If you ring up and say im selling my car next week and i want the cheapest mas air flow sensor, they will sell you a cheap chinese one for the cost of a round of beers whereas if you say I would like to change the brakes on my pride and joy they will supply you with the best.

All the staff at our local branch know never to supply us with any rubbish.

Do i work for euro?!

Same with us Jay never had a problem, does exactly what it says on the tin and you get exactly what you request. Just put Pagid pads on the W208 onto Brembo discs and performance is superb, nothing wrong with Pagid at all.

As for Euro good quality gear at good prices :thumb:

EBC Green Stuff?

Are they any good? I hope so, because I just bought new front & rear pads for my W163 ML.

I have used green stuff in the past and I really don't like them. The pads fit poorly and they squeek all the time despite trying to do everything to stop it. The bonus with them is that they are low dust.

I binned them in the end.

I have the redstuff on my C43 and like them.

I binned my Greenstuff too totally useless, as Olly says only benefit less dust but also worse performance.

was going to switch to Redstuff but the arguments put forward by several motorsport competitors made me go with Pagid pro and glad I did :thumb:
