I'm 44 now, but I was 25 when I bought my first MB. It was a one owner 1969 W114 250 in as new condition.

In 2006 I inherited my Dad's W123 230E.

And in January this year I acquired the 1996 E220 coupe.

So petrol in the 70s was approx 60p per litre, that's less than half of what it is now. The average person in this country makes 16k per year.. Were the average earnings in the 70s 7k per year?...

To be honest, who are you to come on here and simply say mercs are cheap and that's why young people can buy them, that's a bit of a generalisation don't you think? One which I would totally disagree with, and so would the majority of people my age. I have worked hard to buy my car and continue to work hard to afford to run it, I do not appreciate your comments which are total rubbish in my opinion.

My W124 Coupe was sold when new in 1995 for £52500. Using the RPI series, I calculated the equivalent today would be £83,000. The direct comparison Mercedes Coupe E350 today is priced at half that. Cars are in real terms the cheapest they have been to buy. It doesn't take away from your working hard to make that observation.

45 now, owned my first Mercedes C32 AMG estate at the tender age of 36, having previously owned Morgan, Porsche, Bentley and BMWs among many others. Sold it within 9 months as it kept on frying the ECU, and bought a Range Rover. That and another Porsche later, bought a W211 E500 estate four years ago, sold it when it looked likely that Livingstone was going to tax it to death with a £25 a day congestion charge with no residents' discount, and bought my first and now second W124 a year ago.

There are many things I love about Mercedes, but to be honest, I don't think new ones are greatly superior to their competition in the way they were in the 70s and 80s, and they are well nigh ubiquitous.

I'm 29 and have owned the following Mercs in my time...

2000 (age 18) - 1999 C250 TD
2006 (age 24) - 2004 C200 CDI Sport Coupe Evo Panorama
2009 (age 26) - 2005 CLK270 CDI AvantGarde
2009 (age 26) - 2007 B200 CDI Sport
2010 (age 28) - 2007 CLS320 CDI
2010 (age 28) - 2010 E200 CGI Sport Cabrio

Have also owned 3 Smart Cars during my Uni years but I don't think they count as although they had Mercedes badges on them (engine only), they were nothing close to a real Mercedes in terms of class and quality.

I am 62 next week, my '97 C180 daily is the first Mercedes I have ever had. I also own a replica Willys MB Jeep ( based on an early Jago Jeep )

Well I am 62, on the outside at least, arrived here via a myriad of cars, my favourites being a 17000 mile BMW E30 M3 Evo1 , why didn't I keep it?, an early 911, really quite tricky, could never have a bad day with that, it always bit back, and 3 Caterhams, the last one with 262bhp in less than 500Kgs!, that was QUICK!.

Now I like my comforts, and torque, lots of it, even considering a remap to get even more lol.

I'm 24 now, Ive been driving since I was 17 (on the road anyway :D) and bought my first mercedes (a w124 300e) when I was 19.

Now I wouldnt be without one.

27.. got a 560 SEC last year..
always wanted a sec or ce from when i was young..

main reason merc drivers were older was insurance.

very few young people could afford the very high premiums compared to, say, fords.

insurance price structures have changed dramatically in recent years relying more on the age and sex of the driver rather than the type of vehicle.

When I started driving in the 60's, if you saw a merc sports car it was almost always driven by a blue-rinse old woman.
