I have owned my '02 E240 W210 (78k on clock) for about 6 months now.
The air con has never worked and was on my list of jobs. I was going to start with a re-gas and take it from there.
I was out for a drive today. It was about 25 degrees outside and after about an hour's driving the air con suddenly kicked in with lovely ice cold air.
It kept working until I stopped for fuel. When I started up again I was back to no air con.

Can anybody please suggest where the problem might lie?

Well I would find a local air con specialist company, your car needs to be checked out to find out what is wrong if anything,my local company actually repairs compressors, saying they are easy to repair but garages just fit new ones, and as that is all they do,you can be sure your system will be repaired and filled to the correct pressure.

Doesn't need a re-gas by the sound of it. I'd say it's either a sensor problem or a poor wiring connection. As Zipdip says, take it to a specialist.

(Thinks: My W210 had (limited) built-in OBD for the air conditioning. Try Googling to find out if yours has; you won't be the first person to have this problem, so might find a solution online.)

Sounds like the condenser fan isn't kicking in, it usually does when the car is stationary, as soon as the car is moving you're getting air flow through it. Same as the coolant radiator fan.

yep, id go for condenser issue

I wouldn't. It might just possibly be a fan issue, but I rather doubt it; sensor/switch or intermittent electrical fault.

Take it to a specialist.

Well I had it regassed yesterday at my usual indie and it's fine so far.
They didn't find any leaks so fingers crossed!
Thanks for the replies.

It must have been just at the point where the internal pressure sensor prevented the compressor from engaging, and when you took it out for a good run on Friday the pressure rose just enough that it kicked in. I'm glad you got it sorted so easily; in weather like this I hate driving without air conditioning.
