Yep, I agree totally with icedillon. Having undertaken exactly the same run/traffic and weather (ambient temperature) conditions twice in my recently acquired E320 CDI, I showed a saving of 3.5mpg on the second run with A/C off...........................37.6mpg A/C on, compared to 41.2mpg A/C off .
Similar %age results over a much longer period with my previous W203 C320 (petrol).
My own feeling is try not to use it during the winter months unless you have to (e.g. demisting), but whatever you do turn it on once or twice a week for an hour or so to ensure all of the A/C components get a reasonable dusting off.
MB will state differently I believe....the consensus is to leave the controls on auto, and with A/C on continually (hence the ubiquitous A/C indicator lamp illuminated when the A/C is off ...).
