Well , it does say :-

' Staff Sgt Trupish said the pilots reported that the 20-year-old passenger had become unruly and that they were unable to prevent him from jumping. '

So it appears that they were ...

and i suppose all the passengers were asleep at the time

Until the report comes out , we'll never know ;)

This was a small twin-engined plane, not an airliner. Probably no crew apart from the two pilots.

Doesn't help that the linked article kindly shows a 747.

In principle it shouldn't be possible to open the door of a normal pressurised airliner at altitude. The doors are actually plugs (They pull in first and then pivot out) so you'd need to be able to overcome cabin/outide differential pressure to pull the door inwards in order to start opening it.

This was a small aircraft which was presumably pressurised (given the altitude) but may either have a non-plug type door or because the door is smaller it may have been possible for the passenger to open it despite the pressure differential.

Perfectly illustrates the reason I cannot stand tabloids and poor reporting in general.
