airmatic issues

:thumb: Looks like airmatic struts are not made out of paper

Not having Airmatic and ABC confused are you? ABC is the really expensive one. But it's optional on non-AMG and it wasn't a popular option.

As for the HK amp, I've had the problem. In my opinion it's to do with water damage - rain water runs off to the side of the bootlid, onto the strut arms, into the hole, onto the top of the amp, when you open the boot.

The amp is around £500-800 to buy second hand, around £1500 to buy new. No programming needed, direct replacement.

I am very tempted to look for a W221 S500 will need to be low milage and probably a 2012 example. Before I decide insurance is the next area I need to explore, I would welcome all advice on insurance companies are there particular examples that provide a good product at a sensible price, the car will only be doing a low annual milage.

I'm with Admiral, all mods declared, around £500 a year, 5000 miles.

Update; I've had an Airmatic-related "Visit Workshop" message appear.

I'll get it on a code reader on Friday to see what's what.

I've just discovered that reconditioned Arnott struts and springs are now being stocked in the UK by P38 Spares.

So worst case scenario is now a one week wait for a £675 front strut or £375 for a rear airspring.

I'm actually hoping it's a rear spring as that will give me the excuse to stick a couple of new dampers on the back at the same time.

Will let you know what the diagnosis is.

Or you could buy directly for less.

£300 for rear air spring or £366 for front strut.

Unless it is sagging at a corner then it's unlikely to be one of the struts/air springs. More likely to be valve block or compressor with an indicated fault in the cluster but no visible signs of an issue.

Wow - even better. Last time I looked (ages ago) Arnott were still only shipping out of the US

No, no sag at any corner corner. Compressor changed 15k miles/2 years ago. Many the valve block then?

Let's see what the code reader says.......

Anyway, today has been a good school day for me; my 211 is generally in rude health but on a normally-suspended car I'd have refreshed the dampers by now. I've been holding back as I thought it was cripplingly expensive.

So far I have learnt that I can get rear Boges from GSF for £72 each and front struts for £366 each. So could do all four dampers and the two front springs for £876 + fitting.

In my head the parts alone were nearer £2.5k (which they probably were/are if your buying from Mercedes.
