I've got this on my s class-but have never used it. When would you need to use it? (The raising feature is what I'm on about)

Someone told me its if you go off-road. Off-road? In an S class? Not sure that add's up.

Raise it for speed bumps where you feel you may ground the nose of the car. You have those in London....

Some multi storey car parks have steep ramps which can catch the underneath

But the ground clearance on the s class is about the same as that of a normal saloon car (is it not)

With long over hangs front and rear, I'd use it to be safe. Whilst you are safely above the ground, your poor long V8 containing bonnet lip may not be ;)

Crikey up these parts the road surface is so bad I feel I wish i had my old jeep to get about in.

No , he sold that didn't he ? :D

Good Lord! Do you lot ever give it a rest?

And I've been over some pretty high bumps in London, yet never felt the need to raise the car. It doesn't seem like a useful extra to have.

It works very well believe me, some of the places i go you need the Airmatic raise.

i ground out my exhaust and petrol tank going up my ex's driveway and my old coupe has 6" of ground clearance, the rear overhang is so long it dont take much angle to get on the floor, i guess its included on the S class because its so simple to do with air suspension and could come in handy.

My SL has the raise function via ADS ... not needed it so far! Fine on speed bumps etc.

Just don't use the feature then

Oh wow, did you use both brain cells to come up with that? What shocks me is that you clever enough to use a computer, yet stupid enough to not read what I actually posted in the first place.

I've had enough of you and a few other people on this site. If you don't want to say something constructive, then * off and don't reply to the threads I start.

And I've tolerated enough of this nonsense from you and a few other members (they know who they are) for a long time and now its time to stop.

This isn't funny. Its stupid. You miss your old friend? Oh well. But don't think I'm an idiot like him.

Back on topic, I can understand a lot of low-sitting cars would need this option to get over speed bumps, but the S class (being a luxury car) already has adequate ground clearance AND will never really be used off-road etc.

Its like its there as a "show-off" extra. The other button for stiffer suspension doesn't seem like it will be needed either (will it?) On the S55, maybe-you could use that on the track. But a regular S class?

I'm finding a lot of pointless things on the car now......

Well maybe not truly off-road, but how about private roads and paths that are badly pot-holed?

I just assumed that airmatic was fitted for a smoother ride and it 'just cmes with' the option to raise/lower.

As well as on pot holed roads as wemorgan suggests, I've also used it on flooded roads. Not that I'd attempt to tackle serious floods but moving slowly through minor floods, the extra 25mm clearance gives a bit of comfort.

One of the reasons I originally specified Airmatic was because the transition between the road and my drive is sharp. The Avantgarde I had on test had only half an inch clearance with just my wife in it so the self levelling feature became important. I only mention that because the raise feature would enable you to tackle steeper ramps than a normally suspended S Class.

One of the problems with the S Class is the long wheelbase, so the ramp over angle is quite shallow. Cresting steep ramps can catch the belly. I have used it in the past when wading through the flooded river Mole in Cobham. As we know chaps - another couple of inches always helps ;)
