So im seeing more and more "AMG" badges on the boots on 220 250 ect ect......with the AMG trims, wheels and some with painted calipers ect ect.
But does that make it a "full" "real" AMG?
I thought only the 45 55 63 engines ect ect where the only ones with the AMG badges on? I could be wrong but just asking the question. My E350 has a lot of AMG kit on it but i wouldn't put a badge on the boot.
    Silly question?

And to Q3; The addition of the badge was enough to cause you to ask the question, so it could undoubtedly fool some people into thinking that these cars are in fact AMG's.

Now why somebody would want others to think that their car is an AMG, when it isn't, is an entirely different question. (Q4?)

I frequently see a silver R170 SLK near here. The proud owner has not only added AMG badges but Brabus ones as well. That car must go really fast:doh:

There’s a dealer near me advertising a 218 CLS 63 with 6.3 badges above the Bi-Turbo wing badges...so it’s not exclusive to those at the lower end...

Same problem with BMW and the ‘M’ badge, in my opinion...no ‘M’ chassis number then no ‘M’ badge

The 5.5 biturbos should have been 55s, really, to accord with traditional AMG model numbering, but I suppose MB feared some ignorant bozos would think it was slower than a n/a 63. They might until the lights changed...

... and then the latest 4.0tt would have had to be an E40 AMG, and the new E53 an E30. Doesn’t sound that great. Sooner or later there’ll probably be a PHEV AMG and what would that be called! Oh, and the idea of an A20 AMG sounds fairly rubbish.

Oddly I have an E500 with a 5.5 engine, which must be unique: offhand I can’t think of another German car with a badge smaller than its engine capacity. Not sure what happened in the marketing department for that one! (Though mine is debadged anyway so it’s not terribly relevant in my case.)

    I had a BMW 325i M Sport... that was a 3L straight 6. So many people asked if it was a 2.5 4 cylinder?

Reeks of desperation by previous owner.....I'd take it off, if it was my drive.

I think that the people who don't know (what AMG is about) are fooled by it but, the people that do know what an AMG is, laugh at the "wanna be" badges.

It is almost the same as de-badging as it is usually a low end model rather than a sheep in wolf's clothing. I have never seen a de-badged AMG.

MB have really mixed up the naming recently. Mine - SL400 "AMG Line" - 3.0L engine. Not sure what the 400 represents but I do have AMG body styling, exhaust, wheels AND (whoo hoo) AMG floor mats .

    My wife's B180 has a 1.6 engine.

I recall many years ago when I was living in SA, companies started restricting the 'cc' of company cars people could buy and BMW then started badging their cars with bigger numbers than the actual cc.

In 2010 the list prices for the E500 and E63 were c £50k and £72k - so the premium was around 45%.

For that 45% you got something like 520bhp which would have been around 220bhp up on the 5.0 (42%) but only about 120bhp up on the 5.5 (30%).

So I guess someone in marketing didn't want to draw attention to the narrowing gap in power terms so as to make it easier to justinfy the additional £22k for the 63 over the 500.

If it could fool someone into thinking it's an AMG...they know little about the marque and therefore...it doesn't matter.

I don't think anyone is fooled by an AMG badge...they just don't care.
It's only us who notice in the first place...and I don't care either.
