Well, I've just got back from my very first drive in a GT....and it's parked outside the house waiting for another couple of day's driving before I have to hand it back.
Tonight.....I am like a pig in sh!t.
This thing is so so satisfying.
If anyone has experienced an SLS, the GT feels very familiar - they're clearly cut from the same cloth and share a similar character. It retains the SLS's very responsive/alert front end (albeit with much lighter steering), it has a similar superb driving position (which has been perfected further)....heck, it even smells like an SLS!
But it also feels much more modern (technology is almost at the level of the latest models in the core MB range) and it feels hugely better developed - all the odd noises and rough edges and untidiness of the SLS are gone. But here's the statement of the thread....in my opinion, it also sounds MUCH better. Better than the SLS, and even a noticeable improvement over the same engine in the latest C63 that I waxed lyrical about earlier this week especially above 5k (although that didn't have the AMG performance exhaust, the GT does). It's very loud on start up and on the move it has this lovely background warble which hardens noticeably as you rev through the mid range.
It's also very very fast - I think it feels the fastest car I've driven. Outside of initial traction, it feels more accelerative than my 997.2 Turbo was, especially at the top end (and it certainly sounds better whilst at it) and it's got loads more shove than the SLS at the bottom end. This engine, like in the C63 application, is superb.
Transmission - perfect. The best DCT I've used because it behaves like a smooth auto when needed (most DCT's don't), and I simply cannot detect any hint of hesitation on any manual upshift or downshift that I attempted.
Dynamically, as I said above it's very similar to the SLS so it's sharp, responsive and very firm. The three suspension modes are all very different to each other which actually makes them useful although Sport+ is too hard for most roads (unlike in the C63 where Sport+ was firm but bearable). The main improvement that I can immediately detect is a much less wayward rear end (it's better controlled), better vertical body control on undulating roads and traction, lots of traction - roads were damp tonight yet it felt like you could get a decent amount of its power down.
The interior design and build quality is outstanding. Like the C63 it has that wonderful steering wheel, its got a perfect driving position and, thank the Lord, they've fitted a really decent audio system (unlike the shocker installed in the SLS). The car I've got has standard seats which are decent enough, but it needs AMG's fabulous sports seats.
The only thing I'm still not sure about is colour, and this is the colour I've ordered mine in. I have until Saturday to change my mind then theres no going back
Do I stick with red, or revert back to the blue
