AMG GT Test Drive

Well, I've just got back from my very first drive in a GT....and it's parked outside the house waiting for another couple of day's driving before I have to hand it back.

Tonight.....I am like a pig in sh!t.

This thing is so so satisfying.

If anyone has experienced an SLS, the GT feels very familiar - they're clearly cut from the same cloth and share a similar character. It retains the SLS's very responsive/alert front end (albeit with much lighter steering), it has a similar superb driving position (which has been perfected further)....heck, it even smells like an SLS!

But it also feels much more modern (technology is almost at the level of the latest models in the core MB range) and it feels hugely better developed - all the odd noises and rough edges and untidiness of the SLS are gone. But here's the statement of the thread....in my opinion, it also sounds MUCH better. Better than the SLS, and even a noticeable improvement over the same engine in the latest C63 that I waxed lyrical about earlier this week especially above 5k (although that didn't have the AMG performance exhaust, the GT does). It's very loud on start up and on the move it has this lovely background warble which hardens noticeably as you rev through the mid range.

It's also very very fast - I think it feels the fastest car I've driven. Outside of initial traction, it feels more accelerative than my 997.2 Turbo was, especially at the top end (and it certainly sounds better whilst at it) and it's got loads more shove than the SLS at the bottom end. This engine, like in the C63 application, is superb.

Transmission - perfect. The best DCT I've used because it behaves like a smooth auto when needed (most DCT's don't), and I simply cannot detect any hint of hesitation on any manual upshift or downshift that I attempted.

Dynamically, as I said above it's very similar to the SLS so it's sharp, responsive and very firm. The three suspension modes are all very different to each other which actually makes them useful although Sport+ is too hard for most roads (unlike in the C63 where Sport+ was firm but bearable). The main improvement that I can immediately detect is a much less wayward rear end (it's better controlled), better vertical body control on undulating roads and traction, lots of traction - roads were damp tonight yet it felt like you could get a decent amount of its power down.

The interior design and build quality is outstanding. Like the C63 it has that wonderful steering wheel, its got a perfect driving position and, thank the Lord, they've fitted a really decent audio system (unlike the shocker installed in the SLS). The car I've got has standard seats which are decent enough, but it needs AMG's fabulous sports seats.

The only thing I'm still not sure about is colour, and this is the colour I've ordered mine in. I have until Saturday to change my mind then theres no going back

Do I stick with red, or revert back to the blue :wallbash:

The colour looks dull I would rather go for the flat red over that even that blue looks good in some shots but then not so good in others. I think that white really suits the gts with blk wheels and the contrast of the glass roof. The grey looks good and the solid blk will look mean.
That's just my opinion I hope you are well andrew and congratulations on your new car when it arrives.:thumb:

Blue any day

Wow, fairly unanimous.

I've got to do something as I'm clearly not 100% happy.

The blue can look dull in pictures but I now have the benefit of having seen it on my dealers C63 demo, and it looks good in real life. As can this hyacinth red in the right light, but the blue seems to be more successful more of the time.

I honestly think the car needs more than the flat red or the White and I'm not keen on silver cars. Damn....why is yellow £10k!!!!

Just in process of picking up a grey one as we speak looks great. I like the colour of your demo looks good although I can see why your in two minds it's quite understated

Decisions

Sorry Andrew I forgot its you, you're minted it has to be the solarbeam yellow option 278, it's ONLY £10,695 :0)

JBD, do you know what colour the grey one is that you posted earlier in this thread ??

Is that palladium by any chance ?

Palm, regarding colour I really think its whatever floats your boat. Its such a stunning looking car that the 'perfect' colour is only in the eye of the beholder. Some cars suit particular colours but I don't think that applies to the GT.

Go with your heart mate, stuff what the head tells you

You cheeky b@stard :p It is my favourite colour of the lot but I'm not spending £10k on f*cking paint!

Iridium Silver is the colour for GT.

Problem is, there's no colour on the GT palate pulling at my heartstrings. I'm fairly certain now that it won't be this red. So it a choice of the blue and.....erm, the blue. I even considered that Iridium Silver but I just get bored of silver cars.

Buy it and then get it wrapped yellow... If you don't like it then remove it!

Sure but there are lots of other things that cost and you can do without. I don't see why it makes sense to spend this amount of money on a car you don't even really like the colour of. If it makes you feel better Ferrari charge 25k for theirs :)

A few more thoughts after today.....

I really don't like the colour (which is worrying as thats the colour I've currently got on order!)

It's such an event to drive - technically it's probably less perfect than a 991 (as per the reviews), but compared to a test drive I had in the Porsche a few months ago, this AMG just seems more interesting and therefore, to me, satisfying. The sound, the nuggety ride, the immensely direct steering all conspire to make it such an event even when you're pooling around.

It's very fast - the acceleration is very N/A-like with increasing thrust right through to the top end and the sound hardens really satisfyingly. In particular, changing from 3rd to 4th at WOT put's it right into a power band sweet spot as it picks up another wind.

The sound, did I mention this? It is just dirty, rude, guttural and just wonderful. Especially in loud mode :) Nobody is going to be disappointed with how this engine sounds.

The whole car feels like a better tied down SLS (it really is very similar) but with much lighter steering (maybe a touch too light?) and much improved refinement

The build quality is outstanding - no rattles, creaks or noises. Material quality (plastic centre console insert mentioned below excepted) feels very expensive throughout

The metal-effect centre console is really well done - I thought it may look plasticky but it doesn't. I've actually ordered it with the black diamond centre console but having second thoughts on that now. Not sure the silver will go so well with the Saddle Brown interior though.

The plastic inside the centre console isn't as well done - I'm now considering one of the carbon fibre options to rectify this. But that's another outrageous option price :(

The Burmester audio system is very good, a monumental improvement over the SLS

It's annoying having no shortcut buttons for the telematics - the lack of buttons means everything has to be done from the touch controller. Not a biggie, just needs getting used to

I don't think theres a better steering wheel out there than AMG's latest - small, chunky and really confirm to hold. It's a shame mine will come in all-alcantara (as I've ordered the Dynamic Pack) as I love the half leather/half alcantara

You sit incredibly low - I don't think I've sat in any car (Lambo Aventador included) where one sits so deep in the car. Driving position cannot be bettered - straight legs, bent arms and a steering wheel that comes out almost vertically.

The fancy looking centre console isn't particularly comfy to rest you elbow on AND hold the steering wheel.

Thats it for now - I'm off to go out in it again :D

Popped into my local dealer yesterday where they have a Gts demo. What a lovely car in the flesh! Stunning. This one had options of about 30k. Liked it in black. Is that the standard wheels? Prefer them to the other i have seen.

Yep standard wheels the same as the ones on my demo. Looks smart in black but I tend to find it flattens the lines.

I've currently got a new C63S for 24hrs test drive, incredible car, engine is amazing, steering is incredible.

Can't wait to get the GTS

I had a change of heart, mine will be coming in designo mango Matte platinum - In other words Matt grey.
