Hello,

My first post here, so hello everyone.

I have a 2018 AMG GTR running the factory Cup 2 tyres which I have covered around 3500 miles on. The challenge, which most will be aware of in the UK, is wet weather performance so I am looking at options to replace them for daily use, keeping the Cup 2's for track use only. I have seen a few threads but nothing current and frankly concise, so thought I would start another. My car runs the lightweight wheels as you can see here.

Current tyres are UK spec and standard fit Michelin Cup 2 in following spec.
Front: 275/35/ZR19 100Y
Rear: 325/30/ZR20 106Y

PS4S is the obvious choice as they are a superb tyre I have run on other cars, but of course not available in the 325 size. So here are my questions...

1) Can I move to 335/30/ZR20 101Y (Note both width AND load rating)
2) Can I move to 345/30/ZR20 106Y (To get the load rating)
3) Should I up the front tyres by 10mm or 20mm to match if I do
4) Has anyone done this on a GTR and have you had any issues with sensors

Additionally, Mercedes also has the 265/35/R19 98 front 295/30 R20 101 rear option on the filler cap and manual and wondered if anyone has downsized to these on the above wheels and would welcome any views if you have.

Thanks in advance for help and hope this helps a few with a similar dilemma.

Welcome to MBClub. Nice car!

The Pilot Sport Cup 2 is a a great tyre, but it’s almost impossible to get any heat into them in cold and/or wet conditions. As Mrs D says: “I don’t know why anyone would want the bu99ers on”.

You could go for the sizes fitted on the GT C which would give you the option of Pilot Sport 4 S, but you would need to double check the minimum load rating for the GT R in case the Sport Cup 2 are different.

The GT C uses the same size/offset wheel as the GT R - they both share the same wide-track rear end - but in a slightly narrower tyre fitment on the rear. The tyre appears slightly more stretched though.

265/35 19 (98)
305/30 20 (103)

If you’re only intending to use the car on the road, and you value wet (and all) weather performance over extreme dry grip, then you could use winter tyres for anything other than the height of summer.

Thanks for the response.

I have winter tyres sitting in my garage, but they are not suitable for my use case outside winter really.

Load rating is an issue as is size. I have seem some US owners moving to bigger tyres but not on my OEM wheels, though the same fitment size and offset. Problem is PS4S in 335 is a lower load rating, which though should not be an issue, I would love to find someone who has taken the plunge and can attest this. These too all intents and purposes will fit fine and have minimal impact, but trying to find an owner who can attest to any of this seems impossible, so far.

Hi , be very careful altering load rating on your car tyres.

Is there not a Pirelli P zero option in the correct size and load rating? I’m not a massive Pirelli fan myself...

I don’t like Pirelli tyres, they are a step down at this level in my experience. My old R8 V10 Plus came with them, swapped them to PS4S and transformed it.

I don't like them either, awful tyres, especially if its a cold day and a bit damp/wet, I'd say verging on dangerous in those conditions.

Can you not go and ask a local tyre place?
Those guys are a wealth of knowledge I find, I mean a local business, not one of the chains.

I would stick with OEM load rating and sizing .. it takes account of the way the car has been developed and set up to perform as designed

running non approved sizes and load ratings might cause insurance problems as the assessor might claim that the alteration caused an unanticipated change in the car's handling characteristics which then led to the accident .. unless of course you declare the different load rating or sizing as a modification

Are there PS4S in these sizes?

wonder whether these are winter tyre sizes ..

perhaps call Affalterbach for advice?

I believe that Front: 265/35R20, rear: 295/35R20 are intended for the narrow body cars (GT/GTS). They have narrower wheels than the wide body cars (GTC/GTR).

I have a guy that tyres all my cars but he is like everyone I’ve asked, should be ok but can’t be 100%

This is useful to work out actual differences..
