What a very desirable motor I thought until I saw the first of the interior shots. The wood looks like something from a bamboo hut. The I suppose someone must have loved it.

Jesus - Jet plane with rubber tyres.....remember clarkson testing one of those.

Nice car.. The wood in the first one is horrible..

Ok, excuse my ignorance here, but are you telling me this car has a 7.3 size engine in it??

No problem

Yes thats right...!

AMG did these to special order (no brochure ever made etc), you purchased a SL600 V12 and they took 1.3 litre's extra out of it... in simple terms!

Quite bizarre when you think a European firm made this engine, its almost 8 litres, American sized!!

Its the same engine as in the Pagani Zonda S... 7.3 litres..!

a few stats for you... There was the AMG SL 600 (not to be confused with the standard SL600..), the SL70 AMG, and SL73 AMG..

The SL 600 AMG version produced 440bhp with 450BHP possible for the export version.

I got this info from the German AMG Owners Club newsletter on the R129 AMG V12 models:-

The 7.0 AMG engine made 496bhp:-

The 7.3 litre SL73 made 525bhp or 565bhp in Sultan of Brunei spec:-

A very rare little know derivative of the AMG SL's was the SL36 with the 3.6 litre unit from the E36/C36 in 1995:-

Thanks for the info Tedz...

Now I have to put "Drive a 7 litre motor" on my to do list...

From what I can gather the AMG 7.3 variants of the M120 engine didn't arrive until the 1997 model year cars. For 1994-1996 they made a 7.2 version. Both were available in the w140 and r129.

Renntech also produced a 7.4 version for their R129 SL74.

I owned a mint S72 AMG for a while when I was in Dubai which was frighteningly fast. I think the dealer that bought it from me still has it for sale as well.

Pic of the 7.2 engine. Not as dressed up as the 7.3, but just as effective!

In German but some links are in English.

And great to hear from a former S72 AMG owner. Indeed very rare, 386 kW/525 hp and 740 Nm. Displacement 7055 ccm. M120 E72.

The S70 AMG has the same engine displacement, but now with 365 kW/496 hp and 720 Nm. M120 E70.

More rare versions of the AMG R129.

I know of two R129 with the M104 E34 AMG engine.
Then there is the SL 36 AMG, the 500 SL 6.0 AMG/SL 60 AMG.
The SL 55 AMG with the M113 engine without supercharger.

Have i forgotten some model?

It is said there might be a R129 with the M103 3.2 AMG engine.
And perhaps there even is a 300 SL with M103 3.0 AMG stage: 220 hp or 215 hp.
But i have no proof of those AMG M103 engines.

As you see, a lot was possible in those days. And this was only AMG.
Several other tuners did the same.
