Amplifier issue (but not the usual one)

I have recently returned to the MB fold with my second CLK, this time a 2009 350 Sport. I think I got it for a good price as it has issues but I'm working through them at a reasonable rate and overall am very pleased with my new 'daily donkey'.

The main problem and last item to fix on the list before I start improvements/cosmetics is the dreaded HK amplifier. Unlike most of them, mine actually works (kind of) but it plays no mid-range sound. I have the sub working and the high-level audio but nothing more. I took it to Comand in Lightwater and they diagnosed it as the amplifier but I have since not heard from them on whether they are able to source a replacement so I'm looking at options and while I'm happy to pay for it to be repaired I'd really like to buy one and swap them over to be able to continue to use the car as I do a lot of driving.

Even Richard at Comand said he'd never seen one behave like this so I thought I'd share a little video of what is happening.

Also, as I had trouble finding the amplifier and every search I did tells me it is on the right side of the car I thought I'd share the info that on mine it is in the rear 1/4 above the wheel, you need to lay the rear SAM down to get to it but there are two bolts that need to be removed from inside the tonneau compartment (where the hood goes when it's down), start with these two as it will make life easier. I'll upload some pics when I sort out somewhere to host them as photobucket etc. are no fun anymore.

If anyone has a BE7029 amplifier going, please let me know, I'm in the market for one.

Cheers

Richard

Richard, we haven't been able to find one from a source we would trust...

- Yes, very weird. The speaker tests in the amplifier (using Star) show the amp output stages and speakers are fine, but just almost no mid-range output when in normal mode...

If you can't find one, so be it. No worries and I appreciate the help. Can you tell me if any 7029 amplifier will do the job? I'm making the assumption that if I buy the same amplifier and gamble a bit on a used one it will work without coding etc.? I expect it's just a matter of time until that will fail though. I have found a company in Germany that will repair mine so I could conceivably send mine there for repair if I have a spare.

Yes, no coding in the amp, so plug and play. They are available on eBay from the USA !

Hi Richard, I seem to have the same issue.

What was the outcome in the end ? Did you get it sorted ?

Cheers

We’re for ever changing these amps on the diesel s classes We do a proper “initial startup” which updates the firmware on amp and all other audio components as that’s the correct procedure and we have the proper Xentry. Even the basic (non hk) amp fails for same reason. In fact we’re doing one on Monday! But they do actually work without the software all being in sync so you can put a used one in safely! As I said, we do the firmware because it’s correct and removes any other potential software issues.

I replaced the amplifier with an aftermarket unit and went for a wireless Apple Carplay head unit. It cost a fortune and it doesn't look as nice as OEM but the functionality and sound quality are fantastic so I can look past the visual aspect (not that you actually look at it much in reality). I'd still like to get another amplifier and resolve the issue as I am considering selling the car and would like to hold on to the audio kit in invested in especially as nobody will want to pay enough money over the value of the car for me to leave it in there.

CommandOnline couldn't fix my amp when I took the car there so I'm not sure if I understand Richard's post. I do keep thinking about ordering one from the USA, I just can't understand why they are all there and not in Europe. It's not a huge amount of money for the unit but the shipping and if it is faulty then I have to pay again to return it as I did with a UK seller that sent one with the cooling fan broken off internally.

They are probably all in America because over here they don't sell. I had my clk HK fully working one on eBay for ages for peanuts and didn't sell.

Ended up chucking it in the bin !!!!!!!

Ah fair enough. Was hoping I didn't need to spend £££ on sorting this.
I'm determined to figure it out though.
Cheers Richard

I really hope you do figure it out. It's well worth £150 to me to get it done so that it's right for the next owner and it will cost me at least that to buy another head unit to put in so I can keep mine. Might have to bite the bullet and get one sent over.
