Having promptly replaced four wheel arches under warranty last month Mobilo sent a specialist Mercedes techie to the door within ninety minutes of my call today, to investigate a worrying power loss on the E55.

Out came STAR - no fault found on engine or gearbox so after topping up the autobox fluid (it took only a drop so no problem there) we went out on a run.

He agreed it had lost its top-end performance compared with normal, being familiar with the model but as STAR diagnosed no relevant fault conditions (except leftover from a low battery) we decided it was safe to drive it in for investigation.

Couldn't ask more from MB if it was a brand new car.

Incidentally, the guy said that a few years back he was rushing about all day attending to show stopping electrical problems, particularly on the 211 series. Now he's lucky to get one call out a day for the whole E Anglian area, with the W210 model particularly good in this respect.:)

Thats great to hear.
After reading many posts on here normally to the contrary of your experience, it is good to feel reassured that MB can and do their bit when asked.
Incidentally, how old is your E55 and has it got a FMBSH?
Has it had a service done by an indie?
Thanks for sharing.
Adrian.

I am still surpised STAR cannot give active reading from the MAS.

If it can (or could) you would be able to diagnose a faulty MAS by the fact that it under reads peaks readings at WOT at high rpm.

The MAF can put the warning lamp on under extreme conditions, but only when the O2 sensor is fighting back and moved from its stored range, but on an MB it does have to be extreme. There are many other makes out there where the MAS comes up as faulty, but not the MAS alone it comes up with other things and the tachie has to decide what it is in the end.

If would appear that MB have got the fuel/ air flow part of the engine very good.

Does the E55 have two MAF sensors? If so, shame it can't compare the readings of both simulataneously to give an indication of a failed component that is way out of tolerance.

The MAF showed up on the system when they plugged in my car .

It appeared on a bar scale and was within limits at idle but failed when revved

I don't mean the MAF registering a fault (unless totally shot) but in cases of reduced power I'd expect a MB tech to be able to guage if the MAF is reading in tollerance or how close to out of tollerance the MAF is.

From maddog's post it sounds like this is possible. I expect like Audi, MB's tollerance is not acceptable to an performance car enthusiast that knows what his car feels like when on form and will feel the performance drop of a failing MAF while it is theoretically within tollerance.

Adrian - It's 2001/04 naturally aspirated. The big non-service items are done by an indie but I keep a FMBSH for the MobiloLife benefits.

Today I took back my car from the garage. They had done the bar scale test and could see that at high revs (ie fast airflow) the fuelling was totally offscale, indicating the MAF was failing.

With a new MAF the car's become a monster again. Obviously the MAF was slowly degrading and the engine gradually losing power towards the top end, probably over the past year. Now it feels like it's on steriods and goes up through the gears as fast as you like.

So, all good news.:)

:bannana:Good news,, makes me happy when we get one right :bannana::bannana:
