An Annoying Noise

I have a W203 C200 CDI Auto on a 55-plate

There is a strange noise appearing to come from the area of the gearbox. It starts when the car is in top gear. It disappears when you turn the steering towards the left ie taking a left-hand bend but turning to the right it stays.

It is a rapid vibrating sound (remember when we were young you would tape a piece of card to one of the forks of your bike and have it strike the spokes of the wheel, use to annoy everybody) well this noise is annoying me!

Anybody any ideas.

Could be your handbrake cable has dropped. A common problem. It rubs on the prop shaft.

I think there is a mounting point for the exhaust system to the gearbox, might be worth checking that hasn't broken or come adrift.

Parking brake cable on prop as has been suggested. Very common issue.
