damm u guys!!!! I get about 28mpg but I do stop start London driving - oh and I work the engine hard.

Just did 1200 miles Manchester - Barcelona in the 300TD, fully loaded, aircon etc, max speeds according to traffic, and got 26mpg. <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

C32 average is 19 mpg over 5,500 miles. Best on a trip was about 24-5, worst on a thrash about 12. <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':0'>

But the fun in the C32 is priceless <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>

I dont want to know.....
Our old 280SE did 20-22mpg... the 220CE dose more, so it dosnt matter <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

I'm seething with jealousy, Guy. I've driven to Barcelona the long way (via channel tunnel) and the short way (via ferry Portsmouth - Bilbao) and am itching to do it again. Both good drives - but my main reason is that I just love the city.

Anyway, back to fuel consumption...

I just had a hard disk problem and my last backup was quite old, so I've lost some of my data, but get average of nearly 24mpg in the SL (with Ecoteks - was just less than 22mpg before fitting them). Only about 400miles experience in the SE, but 26.5mpg so far - one longish m-way cruise and a bit of local pottering, no thrashing (not that sort of car, really).

My brother just got back from a few days in the West Country in his S320cdi, He states that the fuel computer showed an average of 38mpg <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> .

Mind you, the money he saved on fuel he spent at the jet washes cleaning off the cow poo <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'> .

I guess I must drive like an a$$ around town <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'> , my foot is heavy on the old accelerator.

I get low 20's on town driving, every day to work. With motorway driving, I usually cruise at a steady 80 and the mpg is more like mid 30's.

I could squeeze just short of 400 miles out of a full tank if on the motorway but with town driving everyday I usually end up around 270 mile mark.

230-250 from a full tank, although im convinced i have been robbed of some of my tank...its seems tiny in comparison to other cars ive owned. £34 fills it up from when the reserve light comes on.

A ML55 is S-L-O-W, they weigh in at almost 3 tonnes, whereas the C43 is way under 2...

The 400CDI is the Ml to have, but only LHD.

From our CL600 (V12, 6.0) we average 20mpg, and that is quite heavy footed...bear in mind we have an almost brand new engine, compared to some of you guys with almost 10 year old engines.

We get over 30MPG in our ML270CDI, flat out all the time!! <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

The 600 is not that bad, because you idle everywhere, dont open the engine to full throttle hardly anywhere in the UK...

Although the ML55 weighs over 1000lbs more, the performance figures are almost identical, roughly 0-60 in 6.5 secs.

If you´ve driven or raced one, no way could you describe the ML55 as slow. Ask Billy. <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

But thirsty  <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':0'>   it certainly is.

V12,

Yes the ML55 is heavy but it also has a modern 347hp 5.5 litre AMG tuned V8 under the bonnet. The C43 has a 300 ish hp (not sure on exact spec) 4.3litre V8.

Two totally different cars but I would love to put the ML up against a C43. I think it would be very close, until the the first corner!!

But you just can't account for the grin factor sitting up high in worlds fastest production 4x4.

i got a video with a ML55 racing a M3 and leaving it for dust <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>

I know the grunt factor is different in mine, I'm getting around 40 mpg in normal use, that equates to around 500 miles (best ever was 545) to the tank.......

On a run to Dumfries (from Berkshire) a little while ago I got 42mpg at a steady 90 (travelling late at night).

My diesel is chipped and I've seen the consumption improve from 38 - I suppose it's similar to the comments about the 240/280, when you've got more power you actually use it less(Ithink that's what I mean?)

Diesel is good in the real world - but what I'd give for an AMG V8.......!

I think you wil find that the X5 4.6is is faster then the ML55

ML55:

0-62.5       -       6.7
top speed   - &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; 145

X5 4.6is;

0-62.5 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; - &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;6.5
top speed &nbsp; - &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;149

sorry .... &nbsp;<img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('>

The Porsche Cayenne should stomp all over both the X5 and the ML.

I am personally of the opinion that SUVs suck, so I wouldn't have any of those cars <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>

Fuzzer,

The ML55 AMG was the fastest production 4x4 when I bought it (September 2001)

I stand corrected

time to pay brabus a visit - go spank some BMW ass...

I call the ML55 slow, because for a V8 with a capacity of 5.5L in a modern engine it is. very similiar to a SL55 engine fundamentally, and that is capable of over 200mph. (i know they are two totally different cars..)

I have driven probably about 10...

not as nice to drive as the ML400CDI, the power delivery is not flat enough really, especially for a 4x4...

also the 400CDI almost matches the performance figures and returns about 10MPG more, while being MUCH nicer to drive.

Only problem it is only LHD till like 2004 or something. <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

V12,

How can you compare the Engines of the ML55 &amp; SL55.

Yes they are &quot;fundamentally&quot; very similar in the fact that they use petrol &amp; are V8's.

You obviously didn't notice that the SL55's engine has a SUPERCHARGER fitted which means that it produces 500hp!!!,
the engine in the ML produces 347hp.

You say the 400CDI is nicer too drive I can't comment as I haven't driven one, but I would state that the AMG ML is tweeked for performance over comfort (IMHO)

PLEASE show me the performace figures for the 400CDi you talk about. The only 400CDi I can find does 0-100 in 8.1 and if you are even thinking about the costs of fuel consumption you can't afford one. <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>
