Quite a few of these about. Just looks wrong with a soft top. Cutting out problem is likely to be the crank position sensor.

Ignoring the aesthetics. Would these have even made financial sense?

Its a 93 low mileage car apparently, so cant imagine it ever went below 5k? unless it was a CAT C/D write off or an import

Then you have to add in the cost of the new R230 parts

The paint/labour on top of that. I cant imagine you would ever be able to sell it for more than £10k when it was first done?

I guess i just dont get it financially or aesthetically but you say there are more than one of these things out there so it must appeal to someone.
