They could try not dumping their industrial effluent into their rivers. That might help, since there aren't any fish left in the Yangtze.

The worst part is that the Chinese make about 1% of the profits the importers do. Some of the labour strikes seen in China were caused by people visiting various countries and seeing what things sell at.

I dont blame the Chinese. I blame the industrial demand for profits. We as consumers see very little of the benefits of global manufacture. Apparently we get told that something is really expensive at first and then it gets cheaper later. The price of making something is the same all day every day. The yield may improve but it would make almost no difference to the profit margins given the cost prices.

Goods get made in batches of 100,000 to 1,000,000 and they basically sit around till they are sold. Nothing to do with supply and demand. The demand is all imaginary.

Ha! Just a dry run for the Olympics

When the Interntional Olympic Committee delegations visited China in the run up to the 2008 selection process, many of the coal fired power stations and heavy polluting industries were shut down for the preceding week and the duration of the visit. They knew that the IOC would never short list any country with such dismal air pollution

The shut down meant cleaner air but also massive power cuts. Not that the IOC delegates were troubled by that: they travelled around in a heavily orchestrated bubble of power and light whilst the citizens sat in darkness and things did not work.

The Chinese are building two not very wonderful coal fired power stations per week, industry has geared up since and things are far worse now.
