.........cuz my benz is BUSTED

I've been looking in on this great site for the last few years now, pretty much reading the threads from start to finish regardless of model, just outta general interest really and I know you guys love your motors but right now it aint luuuurve im feeling with mine..... in fact im tempted to get the lump hammer out
On my second new benz now, started out in 01 with an evolution c200 sport coupe.... looked great (i thought at the time.... how wrong i was hahaha) handled like an absolute dream, not the quickest... but quick enough..... had a few niggles with it, a few trips to fix the roof, fuel guage developed a mind of its own... but the supreme, king of all monumental failures wasnt when i had it, ooooh no, traded it into the local stealer for a new E200 elegance, pebble beige leather (W211) when within 3 days he rang to inform me while out test driving the car with potential punter the gearbox (manual) pretty much fell off right in the middle of a roundabout.... i felt so sorry for him...not
So now i got this E200k (manual too...and dont say it, i know)... aircon packed in after 6 months (took em 2 weeks to fix), warranty is out by bout a month when a balljoint goes south (drivers side, so it wasnt the potholes) warranty out by a month so i had to fix it myself...and beating the bejaysus outta your new benz with a lump hammer is NOT a good feeling. But this morning, out the door, 6am, turn the key...... wheeze, woosh, wobble..... thought i was in a trabant.
Popped the lid, had a quick look in... like it would make a difference, got the laptop out, googled like a maniac for the best part of an hour and decided it might be the MAS (all fingers and toes crossed at this point), its firing on all four and sounds to me like the old fashioned motors used to if you fiddled with the dizzy advancing and retarding... or suspect petrol maybe (any port in a storm at this point) So, i ripped out the MAS and unlike any of the threads i've read so far...its a Siemens part dunno if this is the code but would A 271 094 02 48 make any sense? looks totally different to any of the examples i've seen here, cleaned it up with a cotton bud and some tape head cleaner... did i do right? (fingers crossed) ill stick it back in again tomorrow and see what happens, if there is a bit of an improvement ill buy a new one, if its 100% i wont bother.... either way its going in the paper next week and to be honest i think ill got for a 98ish old old model s-class, way i see it now, if it packed up i would have less to lose than a years depreciation on my current e-class.... which here in Ireland now costs around, in Euro, 60,000 or in ST£45,000 and i can pick up a mint '98 S500 for bout 8000 Euro...... and from my experience, and what i've read here, reliability would probably be less of an issue with the better built older benz.

You've had some bad luck there, sorry to hear of those bad experiences.

Guess what I'm gonna say now though, that's right, you can't beat an older Benz, unless it's with a very big stick.

When you say the older S500 do you mean the W140 (the square VERY BIG one)?

If you get the right one they're the muts nuts, but get the RIGHT one otherwise they'll burn very big holes in your walet, big car, big bills.

The interior should be spot on with no missing trim, esp the wood it's TRES EXBENZIVE!
All the electric goodies should work, esp ice cold aircon, sunroof, cruise control. (The aircon can be fixed fairly cheaply if it's just the condensor that's gone that's IF - if it's the core behind the dash it could be 7 day job and cost £2500).

Get one with as many toys as possible, electric heated orthopedic seats, rear blind, parktronic etc....

Get a post 96 car, one with side airbags, it had some of the earlier niggles ironed out. And there's a different ignition system on the 5 litre (can't remember the specifics, but it's better)

Then marvel at the optomism (?) of the 30 figure on the mpg meter.

well, thanks vvvvvery much

hows bout i send you a great big bag o salt, just so you can rub it in good and proper hahaha

Does anybody KNOW how embarrassing it is to have what is the BESTEST car on the whole street, only to spend the morning out in the driveway with the lid up and the nosey neighbours driving past smirking??? well do you? do you?

any ways, nuff of the top gear, got me switch cleaner in Halfords, its drying off now as we speak, be putting the whole thing back together in a min, and did i mention before...... maybe the 1.8k engine in the E-class is different from the how-to posts i read on here, but it was a total pig to get out.....and you know what that means, as the boys in the Haynes world would say..... refitting is the reverse of removal.....ugggggggggggggggh

:D Good luck!!

no joy

Got it back in again, reconnected the battery...... took a big breath.... key in.... ignition on.... engage starter..... ready with the chocks lads........ GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Not even a wheeze, got the plugs out, plug #1 black as soot, plug #2 dripping, soaked in fact, the oil was spotless.... just like brand new, like that makes me feel better, 3&4 same as the first one. So just for pig-iron i clean em off shuffle em about and stick em back in again... back to the drivers seat AND you guessed it... NOTHING.... big lightbulb flashes inside the aul skull and i get out, disconnect the mas sensor and try again... bingo, it starts.... sounds like a lambourghini... HONEST... well a lambourghini TRACTOR that is, lol.... now the glass half empty in me has this image of me spending countless nights doing the haynes thing, buying all those "special tools" u always wanted but hoped you never needed BUT the glass half full part is hoping that its still the sensor.. maybe just maybe a new set of plugs, air filter and a mas will sort it out.... isnt it great being an optimist....

ps, anyone got a "How to" strip and rebuild an e-class engine?.... just in case

:) I ALWAYS recommend taking your boots off before your overalls.

If you are going to strip, make sure it's warm :)

Sorry about that,
Regards,
John the cheeky

I’m saddened too

dublinlad, i:m with you, see my own saga unfold. Literally in a space of 1 yr components are systematically failing. A/c still not sorted, and as I read into the gearbox issues, I:m really scared this is going to be next ... I have poured 000s pounds and sadly aint confident, I will seriously have to let go in less than a years time for the sake of sanity and to get more sleep! Go to the L*xus forums, you wont read volumes about engine troubles just questions about mods/adding electronics basically things to enjoy the car with not constantly grappling with getting it back onto the road (the GS goes back to 1993). My other half loves the benz too but rolls her eyes everytime another issue comes up ... or I start conversations with guess what. Quality of materials used inside the car - top notch bar none, but thats about it. If I could take the leather seats with me I would, love em to bits. I would prob get shot down for saying all this but truely I *have* poured $$$ into solving the probs, there are just too many and seeing the posts, just more down the road... (and believe me I know how it feels to have the 3 point star and be the one constantly opening the bonnet or peeking under the car - mine can't even measure up against my parent's Camry of same mileage and years so whats the point in the extra $$$ - if I was in the advanced years and have time on my hands perhaps its worth tinkering ...)
