Hi I have the exact same issue on my 2019 E53 convertible and AA works fine once out of auto light mode! I presume this must be a software issue?

I've got the exact same issue with my C238. I've replaced the usb port with a new one from the dealers, this didn't fix it. Then I booked it in for diagnostic with them and they said they couldn't find an issue so they deleted and re installed the software and updated it and charged me for it. A few days later I've still got the same problem.
Majority of the time it works. But when it doesn't, just like you I have to turn on the headlights manually and it works straight away.
Spoke to the dealership who are now saying they need to check for any wiring issues. However I don't think this is the issue after seeing others with the same issue.

Hi just saw your post regarding the fault with the usb port right ok FIXED
It wasn't a software issue or fault with the wiring the issue was.
A faulty usb port apparently this is a common fault when I took it in to MB he new straight away he said port common to break down so he changed it under warranty and now works fine no issues at all .

Thought I respond on the issue with the usb android auto would only work if lights where on .
FIXED.
Issue was faulty usb port , very common fault Lucky for me it was covered with MB warranty . MB says very common fault so hope this helps you guys..

Hi mark I don't no if you saw my post on issue with usb port only work if auto lights/lights are on it turned out to be usb port MB said very common issue mine was covered under MB , not saying this is your fault but look at usb port first the port by NFC and cup holder in front hope this helps kind regards Steve
