Anone know of any reasonably priced Insurance companies for learners ?

To be honest, the whole system has become totally daft.

It actually encourages youngsters to drive with no insurance as the cost is totally astronomic and quite unaffordable. As a result, this situation won't benefit anyone who uses the roads.

For the average youngster who doesn't have some sort of financial support from his /her parents, well, they simply don't stand a chance with these sorts of prices.

To add to it all, most driving schools nowadays seem to want to get at least 40 lessons out of you. Priced at between £20 - £25 per hour, the whole thing seems to have become a total rip off.

My 18 year old son is in the same boat, currently insured with collingwood learners at 70 per month. When he passes, the cheapest quote I can find is 2000 and he can't drive between 11 and 6 am!!!! Thats is he does a pass plus within one month. of passing without it increases to 3200

I agree, the cost of insurance for young drivers is forcing them to drive without insurance. Its about time the government sorted something more sensible out really. So what other method can be used. I think restricting the BHP of the cars to certain age groups might be one way, ie 17 - 18 50bhp, 18 - 20 60bhp 21-25 80bhp etc.
OK, I now that you can hit a tree at 40mph in a 50bhp motor, but it would stop those idiot wealthy parents who let their kids borrow the 140bhp Audi A3 for example.
Education is another factor also, some kids just copy Dad, the amount of 40+ year old 'Michael Schumachers' there are around in their Beemers is staggering.
