Hi all

I have a C220cdi, 2011, c class coupe with OM651 Engine (with DPF)
My dad has as C180k, 2008, c class saloon with M271 engine (I think)

Can both engines can use 229.51 engine oil grade/spec as per Shell Helix 5W-30 Ultra ECT C3 - 5Ltr or no?

I am a little confused at the whole process of choosing the correct oil as some websites differ.

Thanks
Rav

Take a look here:

Yes they can buddy , my E class uses 229.51 and because I bought a 20L tub I checked the CLK 200 manual and it says you can use it .
The 229.51 oil probably has slightly higher cleaning abilities because it’s more Diesel engine orientated

Thanks for this, it's a toss up between these two

Shell Helix 5W-30 Ultra ECT C3 - 5Ltr
Mobil 1 5W-30 ESP - 5Ltr

Just a few quid between them

The recommend oil by MB for M271 is 229.5 (and not 229.51 which is predominantly for Diesel engines equipped with PDF).

The recommend oil by MB for OM651 is 229.52 (and no longer 229.51 which is the older spec).

That said, 229.51 oil is listed as permissable/compatible for both the M271 and the OM651, so as you can use it if you prefer.

Thanks markjay, I googled the info needed and it brought me to a pdf from Mercedes which showed which engines are compatible with the engine oil grade.

In the end I went for Mobil 1™ ESP 5W-30 which I believe it can be used on both engines.
I don't know why but I find it so bloody confusing!!

That would be 'MB BEVO 223_2'.

Didn't know they did ballet as well...

Got to be the funniest automotive subject on car forums .
