Another Holiday tainted by MB Dealers

As some of you may remember, last year I had an accident in my C36 and an almighty fiasco with a French MB main dealer trying to get the repairs done, only to find they left out a few key parts to the suspension. Anyways, it's still not over, still being dragged out by MB Customer service and the French Dealer.

A few weeks ago I went to Spain in my C43, 2nd attempt at this holiday, and I missed out France altogether and took the boat from Portsmouth to Bilbao in north Spain. After a great drive through Spain, I started to enjoy myself...

Until the mobile rings, and its the local stealer back home. "We have to move your C36 sir, can you come collect it today please?" Obviously I explained that would be a little difficult, and I'd feel happier collecting it myself on my return. They said they had building works going on, and wanted to move it out of danger. So now I'm thinking a cement mixer is about to unload on my bonnet or something, so they suggest they drop it back to my house for me... I reluctantly agree and leave instructions... Mistake no.1!

A few hours later, a call from my housemate stating that MB have dropped the car off, but on a neighbours driveway!! Not only that, they disconnected the battery and gave the keys to my neighbour!! Fortunately, my neighbour and I are on good terms, and he wouldn't have minded moving it for me, but I couldn’t ask him to go connecting up the battery etc. So I ring the garage, tell them what they've done, and to get someone there to sort it ASAP. This has now taken most of the morning, I did have plans for the day but had to put them on hold. An hour passes, no calls, so I chase up MB who say the guy is on his way back to move the car. Great I think, perhaps I can continue the holiday now?

No... sorry... Yet again, MB excel themselves in cocking it all up buy moving the car on to my driveway, and in to my garage.... ..with the door still shut.
So the guy knocks on our door, says to my girlfriend he's made a slight dent. How he did it I don't know, surely these guys move cars about all day? The stealers reaction has been to refuse to put in writing that they accept responsibility and will repair the damage. They claim the small dent can be knocked out by one of their mechanics and a hammer, and the scratches to the car will polish out. I am of course hopping mad, and have had most of the day now wasted from this.

On returning home, I can see chips to the paint, which wont polish out, and two garage door companies have said the door is beyond repair, and already weakened. I will not compromise on the security of my house, so I have sent the stealer a quote for a new door, and told them I expect a re-spray of the rear bumper and a new door.

I'll let you know how this one unfolds....

..you have my deepest sympathies. I think you should write a letter to them stating your claim. Don't forget to include the inconvenience factor as well as the actual costs. Give them a deadline to respond in writing or you'll take matters further. Take the letter - let them sign for receipt of it. If it were me I'd be looking at getting a solicitor's "letter before action" after the deadline passes, and then go for the small claims court. From your post they don't have a wheel to stand on.

I've already taken some legal advice on this, and sent in a letter saying I won't be happy without a new door and a re-spray. Photos of the damage have also been taken, which I belive is for their insurance company. A step in the right direction I suppose, got to be better than a grease monkey bashing it out with a hammer! They've still kept quote about the bumper though, do you think I should ring them or only deal in writing from now on?

YES. that way there is no doubt as to what you (and they) said when.

They do get some clowns moving cars. A client had his SL320 collected for a service recently and the service guy from the dealership couldn't work the car as it had keyless go................ Client has to tell him how to start it - and then was worried coz it cost him over £60k.............

Pay peanuts, get monkeys etc etc

I take it that the Stealer is MB B*i**ton...?

None other! Need I say avoid at all costs?!

Man that story really sucks!

I'm sure that my local dealer would have been very appologetic and keen to sort out the problem, not try to deny it was their fault......or maybe the garage door jumped out and hit the car whilst it was a safe distance away.

MacGregor, where did you get your fancy lights from, and did you have any problems getting them to work, coz I've tried LEDs in the front sidelights of my C270 and they don't work.

By the way my mate's got a C43 Estate, how rare are they?

Everything in writing, but they might try to communicate by telephone.

Whenever this happens simply write down everything that is either agreed, or disagreed and then send a letter to them...

Further to my telephone conversation with Mr Bloggs (ALWAYS get the persons name) at 2pm, Tuesday 12th July 2005 etc etc......

That way you will always have a written record.

If this is your local dealer try not to be threatening; everything that has happened is their fault, you hold all the ace's, but after this claim is settled you still want to have a good relationship with them

I am sure this 'mechanic' did not deliberately ram your garage door and we all make mistakes. You clearly and deservedly want renumeration and hopefully the dealer will do the right thing without the need for you spending money getting legal advice.

Good luck with getting this horrible event sorted out, and next time take a holiday in England!! ;)

Regards,
John
