Hello people - hope you all had a good Christmas:)

I've spent the last few hours trying to narrow down the choices for a new laptop.

Last laptop has lasted 5 1/2 years and in recent years has suffered with overheating and now battery failure.

My preference is to buy slightly above average spec to try give the machine a longer life and would therefore prefer dedicated graphics memory and a "newer" processor.

I think I've narrowed the choice down to 3 and would appreciate your opinions:

Acer 7736G Laptops - Cheap Acer Laptops. Buy the Acer 7736G laptop at PC World.

HP DV7-3020sa Laptops - Cheap HP Laptops. Buy the HP DV7-3020sa laptop at PC World.

The Dell Online Store: Build Your System

Feel free to throw any other similar options into the discussion.

Thanks

Well I bought a well specced HP DV6 a couple of months ago to take away on business. Just searched Google for the link, and noticed how many are being sold refurb'ed for about £120 less than I paid, and I think mine will be going the same way. Mine can take up to a minute to open a jpg file amongst other things, so it's going back now I'm home.

Budget started around £450 - £500 but quickly realised £600 is nearer the mark for the spec I had in mind.
Each of the 3 listed above are £599

Start with your preferred chassis and then choose your specs. Good after sales service as well should you need it.

I have the Dell Studio 17 and I'm delighted with it.

Powerful, nice computer. But it's not what I call a laptop.

Mine is a desktop replacement and is a laptop so it can be packed away and be nice and tidy for Mrs M who has OCD.

I specifically bought a 17" with the numeric pad to the right of the keyboard as it's something I use regularly, and the screen size is much better.

It's too big and too heavy and not sturdy enough to be a true portable machine. As a desktop replacement that may need to go on the move ocassionally it's fantastic, if you want a true laptop that's moving with you daily than you need a proper machine like the Dell XPS...different budget though.

When I travel I take my old Dell 15" Inspiron with me.

It is intended as more of a desktop replacement - will rarely travel outside the home. Occasionally we have taken laptop on summer hols for kids games/dvd's, but kids are 17 & 19 now, so not so likely now.

Looks good, but about £100 more than the 3 I've found so far. Would have to think carefully about this.

Got this
ACER Aspire 7736G
arrived today
All seems ok but taking time to set up in the same way the old laptop & desktop function.
Amazing how many passwords have to be entered/remembered

We have been using Acers at work for some time, last few months we've had a lot of screens failing.
