In my limited knowledge I think its likely that the spring must be on the road for some time than got compressed by tyres of another vechicle and then released again.
Its very unlikely that the spring came directly from a vehicle as you have the wheel arches, tyres and other suspension parts on its path.
nevertheless it will interesting to know what really happen so we can make sure it will not happen again.
