I've often read/heard said that the "older" turbo diesel engines (e.g. W202 C250td / W210 E300td) are deemed to be better than the common-rail CDi replacements.

Is this the case or not? What are the pros and cons?

TIA, David.

For 605/606

Pro's:
Reliability
Refinement
Overall cost of ownership

Con's:
Fuel economy (though this is getting very marginal now)
Outright torque production.

Really early engines:

615/616/617

Heavy old engines, durable but not that good economy wise, easy to work on.

Early engines:

602/603/605/606

Durable, great on fuel, reliable, easy to work on, cheap parts.

Later engines:

611/612

Great on fuel, not very durable, difficult to work on, parts can be very expensive.
