A few quick questions...

Secondly, the omnious parcel shelf... I have the holes (visible from the boot) but not the speaker grills - any ideas where I can source a parcel shelf with grills?

Finally, what size speakers fit in the rear doors and the parcel shelf? I infer that the fronts are 17cm speakers... but the rear doors and parcel shelves?

Thanks,
Michele

You're in luck, I have a rear parcel shelf that I've replaced in my car complete with headrest cut outs and speaker grills, it's grey yours for £30 delivered. It is in very good condition, PM me if you're interested.

The speakers are good and very similar to the Pioneer custom fits for the W202, but you could do a LOT better for power. Unless your getting them dead cheap they dont seem all that good in comparison to todays standards. Heres a nice setup for the W202 that I would recommend:

Front Doors:

Rear Doors:

Rear Shelf:

Dont forget you will need the adaptor plates though these will include the spade wiring adaptors as well:

Front Door:

Rear Door:

Rear Shelf:

I already ordered the adaptors as I knew I would need them. I decided to go ahead with the kentucky-fried-chicken speakers - £50 all in. Not cheap, but cheap enough that I can change them without shedding too many tears when I find something better.

I'm currently planning to power them without an external amp (I have a sony headunit that should push 4x52W - but I think thats max, not RMS... can't remember!)

It's actually quite funny - the whole reason I'm doing this is that I was at helfrauds the other day with a friend who needed a bulb for an MOT...£20 for a bulb... but... they had a pair of Sony Xplod subs, £50 on clearance, 1500W/450W (peak/rms) I couldn't resist... Ironically, I'm not into music that they are suitable for... I tend to listen to classical, opera, oldies... (and the occasional heavy metal). You should have seen the look on the tellers face when I said I'd be playing opera on them!

I now need a capacitor (I'm thinking 2 or 3 farads) and an amp...

Speaker wise I'm going to look around - I like the setup you've recomended... what amp would you plug it in to?

While on topic, can someone explain what a crossover filter does and why I need one (or not?)

Thanks!
Michele

EDIT: Do those asus Eee things have VGA/s-video out? I'm thinking... touch screen in the dash, SSD laptop in the boot and a USB internet dongle for connectivity :p

Ok, so I've removed the rear shelf (wow those headrests are a pain to remove!)

I've even found 2 speaker grills on the back of my shelf, never noticed them :p NW - I'd still like t get that shelf off you, I found a stain on my shelf, so I might as well get it looking clean!

Does anyone have part numbers for these (or should I just ask my dealer)
- Plastic screws in boot that hold down the black styrofoam behind the rear seat
- rear doorsills (mine are really scratched, I might as well change them while I have them off!)
- Plastic expansion things in boot, used to keep lining attached to car

One last point, there are 4 holes for speakers under the rear shelf! What would the advantage of having 4 speakers on the rear shelf be? Am I missing something?

Michele

EDIT: OK, reading around I was thinking of getting a pair of "DB AUDIO T-REX 6.2C" for the front and a "DB Audio T-Rex TREX6.1" for the rear. They seem to be getting rave reviews, have a pretty good range (52 - 35,000Hz; the low end will be compensated by the sub) and are at the limits of my budget... what do you think? Ever heard of DB audio?

You could run 2 out of that 3 channel setup through the head unit no amps needed but you would need so for the third channel so an exaple could be as as follows:

Front Door + Rear Door running through head unit
Rear Shelf + subs running through amps

crossovers simply put split the mid bass and high pitched treble frequencies.

I need to change the front speakers on the 1998 W202. The front left speaker stopped working all of a sudden. Does the original one have a crossover? where about does the speaker & tweeter wire meet as new speakers might have a crossover.

Thanks

Shala

The original speaker doesn't have a crossover visible, but I assume there is one hidden away along the chain somewhere.

I just took out the old, plugged in the new - they came with adapters to fit the MB loom so I didn't even need to cut the wires, which was nice.

My guess is the crossover would be somewhere in the dash, if there is one - simply because it would be halfway between the door speakers and the tweeters...

Using a thin plastic tool... I used one supplied by Apple to open laptops...

There are 2 clips in front and one behind. One of the ones infront you access through the air vent, the second by sliding the tool under the now loose cover.

If you want/need I'll post a howto with pics...

you can fit most speaker in inc tweeters, tweeter either wedge in or you may have to make a base up for them and use something like a glue gun to put them in place.

can I replace peakers without taking off the doorcards? i can just take the grill right? I got the facelift W202

Also, whats the wattage on the original mercedes speakers?

guess not. most wiring & the bracket were behind the doorcard so i guess whole thing will need 2 come off

Where can I get cheapest component speakers? dont care about quality. just to replace the OEM speakers.

In the facelift, the front doors at least allow full access (including the brackets etc) through the removal of just the grill. Not too sure about the rear doors though.

do i have to buy an adaptor or can i just put on universal speaker?
