I just noticed a 20cm crack at the top on the right of my windscreen on my W124 (LHD) there is no sign of any object hitting it.

I washed the car yesterday and it was about 25 degrees and the car was in the sun. Could it have cooled down to quickly and cracked?

My dad had it replaced about 7 years ago.

whatever The cause buddy , its still new windscreen time

Maybe, it's hardly visible, and its in one corner. I'll see if the insurance will pay for it again and get it done better. It wasn't fitted very well.

A wash and cool isn't likely to have caused it, Merc quality is above that.

it's not Merc and wasn't fitted by Merc. It was fitted by a glass shop and isn't heat reflective like the original.

Anyway I'll get it changed when I'm ready to sell it.

Have it changed for a proper one, it's certain the insurance will pay.

Unlikely. Most of Southern Europe - not to mention the Middle East - have temperatures much higher than that, and windscreens don't go pop whenever the car is washed.

(The windscreen might crack if you do it the other way around - i.e. pour boiling water on a frozen windscreen in winter)

I'm sure It could be a possibility if there was a defect in the glass. My screen had a defect/chip in the top edge of the glass and on a 30deg day I cleaned the fly shit off then rinsed off with a hosepipe and the screen cracked from top to bottom. Having said that its highly unlikely to happen otherwise.

Yes, temperature differences can make an existing crack worse. Though it shouldn't affect a perfectly serviceable windscreen with no existing chips or defects.

Do I take the car to a dealership or a indy or a specialist glass shop? I'm in Spain so it's not quite the same but what would you suggest?

I'll ask here as well.

Given the car's age, I would take it to a glass specialist (or the Spanish equivalent of Autoglass), and ask for an OE windscreen, but not genuine MB, due to price. Pilkington Glass is a UK manufacturer that supplies windscreens to MB. Their aftermarket product list is here: Pilkington Glass for Mercedes.

That said, if your insurer is paying, just take it yo your local dealer and insist on genuine MB windscreen :thumb:

Most likely cause is rust bubbling within the windscreen aperture and distorting the glass - this can happen unseen and the first you know is when the screen cracks .

On a W124 , original glass would have been Sekurit .

I just rolled the car back about 2m and the crack went 2 thirds of the way down. I'll post a pic in a bit.

When I first noticed the crack it was were my finger is, now it's cracked further. Definitely going to get it replaced when I'm finished working on the car.IMG_20200727_154235_50.jpg

Corrosion on the windscreen surround is a possible/probable cause. I have had this on our 124 and also our son had the same issue on his. It doesn't need much corrosion to cause it and it usually presents as a crack starting at the edge of the screen. It would be worth checking this out as it will only get worse if left untreated

It was flagged up to me as the cause when getting a screen replaced on one of my 190s .

The guy was good enough to take his lunch break , giving me time to go round it with my angle grinder and paint with Hammerite ( all I had to hand at the time ) .

I'll take the exterior trim of around the windscreen when it cools down and see what I can see.
