This and that..
I came across an advert for a gorgeous midnight blue sel in Kent, and was wondering what people thought of them?

Are they horrendous to run? Problematic? Or as wonderful as they look?

I'm dreaming really, my wife would kill me.... one day perhaps

The self levelling suspension struts/shocks on the back, are I believe, no longer in production and they can suffer from knackered units.

Engine wise and transmission wise they are pretty bomb proof and come from a period in Mercedes History when build quality was top notch.

My 500SEL has been surprisingly reasonable to run - 20+ mpg , not too hard to get 25 .

Problem free over the last 4-1/2 years , although I'm now thinking of selling up as it needs restoration , mainly bodywork issues - rust under the rear window / parcel shelf area .

As above , mechanically they are very robust , comfort is excellent and although not as sharp in handling as newer models they waft along effortlessly and have a 'feel good factor' that is hard to equal anywhere else .

I've had 6 w126 cars and 3 of them were 560SELs. They're expensive to run and maintain. The best w126s that I owned had had thousands lavished on them by previous owners. The dogs had very little if any service history.

I think that good ones are very scarce on the ground now and personally if I bought another I'd get it professionally inspected before buying. If you'd like more info. PM me.

I've currently got 3 560's. They can have rear sls or full hydro suspension. In either case, struts rarely fail. Accumators are wear items and need to be replaced or else the ride is as hard as a rock (and then will damage the struts if left unattended).

Rear SLS cars have 2 and full hydro cars have 5 (basically the same system as the 6.9).

Car is very easy to maintain and very DIYable. But fuel consumption is high.
