Any ideas on what might have caused this?

have owned this car for several months and it is perfect in every other way.

I am not overly concerned.

Whereabouts is it? Could well be a poor smart repair to cover damage.

Looks like someone's used mastic to stick something there

Possibly. Actually was my thought along the lines of mobile phone holder.

Looks more like hot burn marks to me, though maybe the plastic does' not like the mastic type chemicals !

Does it sit proud of the rest of the column, or is it actually burned into the plastic?

Slight burn into plastic I would say. I will nip out and try get a better image.

It'll be damage from hanging those atomic air fresheners you get free at the Eastern European car washes off the cruise control stalk.

I never realised that was possible. Think I shall make sure no one gets anything like that for the car!!

Caused what? :dk:

Ohh there's a link, can't see it on the app :(

Does appear to be air freshener damage - have same problem on Zafira. Does make you wonder about the consequences of breathing in the fumes from an air freshener that can melt plastic to this degree. One of the reasons I never use one.
