I've got a couple of very strong ideas for, in particular, two inventions and I wanted to know is there anyone one here with any advice as to what the process is?

I've done extensive research on the Internet to see if anyone else has come up with anything similar and it seems not.

There is one on the US that is vaguely like one of the ideas and another in Bulgaria for the other.

I've looked on a few invention websites and they are a bit nosey as to what my inventions are and I don't want to give my ideas up without having at least some sort of patent or suchlike.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.:thumb:

My BIL is keen on patenting stuff, he said he found the Patent Office very helpful.

It was some sort of sliding weight wave power machine mechanism.

The Patent Office checked nothing similar exists and granted his idea.

I would give them a bell.

I agree, be very careful who you tell. I have had some experience of this sort if stuff (it can be expensive). PM me with brief details of your inventions and I'll get back to you.

I would recommend Harrison Goddard Foote. LINK.

HGF have offices in the major cities - Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield would be your closest, Lee.

I never googled my idea for fear of being snooped upon. If you go to a patent attorney they will conduct a specialised secure search.
It's similar to google in a way, and by supplying a few keywords you'll know your fate within seconds. I did. :(

My idea was patented only in Germany, but 7, years ago, so I could still apply for UK and other patents.
However, the patent expert I spoke to (although she didn't in any way discourage further patent applications for the idea) suggested it could be fruitless and also expensive.

The idea I (and the German chap) had was a way of preventing the deterioration of an automotive component.
It was suggested at my meeting with HGF that there was a possibility that the idea was "bought" and then locked away to prevent its use.

It's quite difficult to get to see, and then convince the right people with an invention. Indeed, the inventor of the Black & Decker Workmate visited that company with his idea and was told there was no interest in the product.

So "Mr Workmate" set about visiting small hardware stores with his product and when sales of the unit grew, he recieved a call from no less than Black & Decker, and the deal was done.

    Best of luck.

    In a broad Scottish accent.......

    Your business valuation is ridiculous,
    Your sales predictions are ludicrous
    Your figures don't add up,
    This isn't a business, it's a hobby,

    And for that reason........

    I'm out :D

One piece of universal advice - play your cards VERY close to your chest.

Second piece of advice, depending on the nature of the idea - be prepared for a long and difficult road, and potentially a surprisingly expensive one at that.

Patent law can be very woolly. I know a little about it - having been the recipient of a writ from a global mega-corp claiming patent breach. That certainly loosened a few sphincters, I can tell you. Funnily enough, the lawyers who helped me fend that one off (successfully I might add) are in Sheffield.

I intend to keep my cards close to my chest, trust me Keith.:thumb:

One of my ideas has been bugging me for a while now, I've tried disproving it to myself but it just keeps coming back how obvious an invention it is, so I've got to at least give it a chance....

I generally can come up with a solution to most problems if I'm given all the information on the problem. Maybe I've been in the wrong line of work all my life....:(

I'm amazed that you missed out your hero Clarkson.

Mind you, most Doncastrians aren't that keen to claim him as one of our own....

I'm in a similar boat SweetPea...

    With 6 ideas.

However I am tackling the process slightly differently - can't say anything for now!

Will let you know how this progresses.
