There are huge benefits from competing currencies.

Why let one flavour of Government and Banking official control the money in your pocket? By having truly independent banks, each offering their own currency, people will naturally migrate to the one which offers the best balance of money supply versus banking products.

Tesco Pounds, Virgin Dollars, M&S Shillings - a free market makes a bank put its money where its mouth is.

There is very little in life which requires a central 'government' - though a left-wing apologist will be along shortly to deny that :D

Why Yes. I live in Lewes.

Personally - I think it is a stupid idea.

Apparently it will quote : "help cut CO2 emissions..."

And just how will it do that? No one can park in the town since they introduced the parking scheme. You have to pay to park anywhere in the town centre. Most people I know now drive and go and shop elsewhere.

Stupid, stupid, stupid! Grrrr!

How about a world currency? One side of the notes and coins to be standard the other as each country chooses. No more paying charges for buying foreign currency or for using a debit or credit charge abroad. Wherever you go you would know the exact cost of an item. Take your Pound (or dollar or whatever it's called) anywhere and spend it without penalty. The only losers would be the banks and currency exchange places.

Think of it, before the Euro was introduced you start a trip round Europe starting with £100. Without spending any of the £100, just changing it into the currency of each country visited ( and most will not change coins) you would be luck to return with more than £50 left.

It sounds great. Just like the idea of the Euro sounded great. Unfortunately, it's the extra layer of government and bureaucracy required to screw it up which brings the idea crashing down :(
