Fire in place and alight, real dog in shot this time!

looks good.

Did you go for a backboiler?

I would have suggested you don't incorporate a backboiler. They cool the firebox and reduce operating efficiency imo.

Thanks, i'm quite pleased with how its turned out but my god it was messy especailly when the liner was dropped down, even though I covered over the opening there was bloody soot everywhere. We went for a standard stove, no back boiler and its a 12kw so the output is, whats the word? DAMN HOT !!!

Have you found a good supplier for logs yet?

There is a quite local solid fuel supplier who's prices seem good. Just over £3 for a bag of hardwood logs ,when I clear my shed out i'll buy a ton bag for £70 of him. Though i have found that as its a multi fuel i chuck a bucket of anthracite on it at night and with the draw vents closed it last until about 8 in the morning. Anthracite is £7 for 25kg so quite cost effective.

Interesting, I'm in the same area as you, care to share your source?

Wood burners get through wood at an alarming rate.

Mine is ok, but you have to use thick logs and keep a lot of ash in the grate.

I had 2.25 m3 of 18 month old ash (wood!) delivered for £140, and I would say that on current usage it should last easily til end of March. Mind you, mine is a 5kw burner, 82% efficient with full exposed flue and in a very insulated house. When running, no heating is required to keep the house at 18c.

We have found the same Charles, we dont use the heating at all now,the combi is only used for baths etc. Theres only myself and my wife here and neither of us can sleep in a warm bedroom so the upstairs rads are never on anyway. With the fire on and the door to the hall open it makes it very pleasant right through the house. As I stated at the beginning of the thread the house is over 100 yr old and the walls are about 18 inches thick so once the heat is in here, it stays in here.

Not a problem, http://www.supaheatfuels.co.uk/ Its right by Clydach market if you know where that is.
He has different types of hardwood logs, I find their own sourced ones to be very good at about £3.20 a bag, but bulk works out cheaper if you have space, £70 for one of those bulk sacks, (like you get sand in)

With Ash die back will wood become even cheaper as growers cut their loses (pun intended) and harvest what they have before its all US? From the horrific rate it spread through Denmark one can see within another 3-5 years this disease will be everywhere in the UK.
