My brother had a Cayman for around 2 years from new. Day to day driving it wfar from practical and he suffered serious back and bum ache as a result.
The thing that made him bail was the clutch failure after 18 months and 12k on the clock- funnily enough Porsche UK not at all interested....... :wallbash:

How do the iconic lyrics to Janis Joplin's song go ..... Oh lord why don't you buy me a Mercedes Benz - my friends all have Porsches.....................

... and so did Janis

996 are not as susceptible as 986 & 987 although similar in design the 996 is more heavy duty in the bearings and hence more reliable, my bosses 996 is now on 156,000 no problems whatsoever

there are 2 986s on boxa.net with more than 100k miles with no IMS or RMS issues. There is another 986 on boxa.net with 260k miles in the USA, again no IMS or RMS issues.

How do you know that the bearings on the 996 is "more heavy duty"?

My brother in law who is an ex cosworth engineer has his own business which specialises in Engine and Manual gearbox rebuilds, There are always numerous Porsches going through and I've seen all types of Porsche engine as well as others,Subaru, Maserati, Ferrari, Aston and his passion Yank V8's on the bench. Bearing spec on 996 is different to 986. Which is the reason my crank knocked out as the bearings in my wifes washing machine are more heavy duty than those in the 986.

In case you have not seen my other posts this is one of the businesses we will be incorporating in our new Performance and Prestige Service centre that we will be opening shortly.

Cheap for a reason. Horrific running costs. Hence 3200s are almost 10k now

Yep you are right there, but I guess that depends how many miles you do. My track so far is that when work is a long commute as it is now (90 miles/day) I run 2 cars a Turbo Diesel estate for work and the commute and buy something nice for the weekend hence the CLK. When work was on my doorstep less than 2 miles commute I ran 1 car usually Porsche, Maserati or BMW M series. So my view is every 3 years its a £25k spend on either 2 cars or one car depending on work location. So if you really have a low mileage commute then running costs really dont enter into the equation.

Totally agree. Best thing i did was buy a station car so running costs weren't an issue for the 'weekend car'. Now i'm stuck in the big smoke for the next few years at least i'm going to be using public transport. Mrs has a company car now so i reckon this is my chance to get something a bit more 'special' for a few years as my mileage is now down to circa 3k

Excellent that mileage should allow you to run something pretty special, unfortunately my mileage has gone back up to about 30k and likely to stay that way for the next couple of years.

Only problem is with the amount of deposit you need to raise now i can afford v little capital. Reckon 55 or tvr best bet.

these are 996s ...........................

what does he have to say about reliability and enjoyment?

He hasnt had the Audi long enough to comment about reliability - but nothings gone wrong yet.

As far as enjoyment............
You have to remember that the enjoyment of owning a particular car embraces many factors. Driving enjoyment being the usual point in question.

Well, he never really used either Porsche to its full limit potential, I think he just enjoyed driving around in a quality car that had capabilities beyond whatever he was ever likely to ask of it.
And much the same could be said of the Audi. Its a very capable car and while nobody would suggest its a Porsche beater, nevertheless I think he extracts just as much enjoyment from driving it as he did the 911.
And of course, as a big added bonus, its generally kinder to your pocket than either Porsche.
"Enjoyment" is very subjective parameter and as such will differ from driver to driver.
One persons perfect car is another persons dog.

Beware on the TVR running costs are more than the Maserati, I seriously looked at buying a Cerbera and spoke to loads of owners and some of the top TVR specialists in the Country. They all advised that to take care of servicing and known problems on these cars I should budget on spending £5k per year  Put the insurance and fuel on top of that and its starts to get expensive for a weekend car.

For any car with known high repair costs I'd seriously look in to getting a comprehensive warranty. I think there have been a few good recent threads recommending various companies.
