E220CDI
Hi, I have a 2001 E220CDI estate with 39k miles onit. It's about to go out of warranty. When warm it's absolutely smooth. When cold it clatters and sounds just not quite right (not smooth). I know it's going to be a bit louder but it doesn't seem to be even.

I live in Potters Bar, herts. If anyone is nearby I'd really appreciate it if I could hear yours start from cold, just so I know if they all do it or it's just mine?

Here's hoping...

My hubby's Voyager which is a merc 2.5 crd engine clatters like nobody's business when it's cold and noticably more so the colder it is. Soon warms up and calms down though.

It's now 3 1/5 years old with 60k miles on it and running like a dream. You've prob got nothing to worry about 0 but as it's under warranty get it to the dealers to check it out and log the concern, then if anything does come of it you can go back to that claim and should get it under warranty ;)

Totally agree with Pammy. For your own peace of mind, go back to the dealer but make sure you go first thing in the morning. Then have them start a similar aged vehicle. You might be happier if it were a similar model to your own, but there are plenty of Mercedes-Benz with the 2.2CDI, C-class, and the V-class come imediately to mind.

Some diesels are like people who are not good early risers. They like a fag, ;) and a cup of coffee ;) before getting motivated.

Good luck,
John

I've just posted on this very subject (see rattle at 2000rpm). I've had mine checked at garage and they tell me it's ok. Mine rattles at about 2000rpm when cold, but after 10 minutes or so it's fine. Cold weather doesn't do it much good!

All. thanks for your responses. I shall learn to live with it then... Just don't like the sound of it, but MB garage say it's fine and so do you :-).

Cheers

Sam

I had a C220cdi, and found it to be quite a noisy engine, particularly when cold. Also quite rough sounding when driven hard. Now have an E320 cdi, which is a much smoother engine. Still noisy when cold though

what fuel do you use try bp diesel defn less smoke and more grunt and 2 or 3 mpg more also did you know if you wait 5 secs after glow plug light out car starts quieter try it

I tried several tanks of BP Ultimate in the C220, and did not really notice any difference. It's also quite a bit more expensive, so I'm sure a a saving of 2-3 mpg (not that I noticed one) would be offset by the higher cost.

I would consider extending the warranty

Hi, I did consider, but they want £223 to inspect the vehicle plus £600 for the year. So for £800+, I think I may trust in the MB reputation... I think the extended may not also cover as much as the standard from new... do you think I'm being too hasty?
