I am considering getting a remap but wonder if others have already done it. What sort of figures/. MSL looks like the place to go? Does it invalidate MB warranty?

STAR is the official MB tool that plugs into your car and reads all the codes and can be used for fault finding and upgrades. All main dealers have it as do many independents.

What do you hope to achieve by re mapping a C200 ?

Thanks Petrol Pete for explaining Star.
More mpg, or performance which ever your right foot demands. Just wondered why de tune the engine and is it just software? Or cams and things.

They do it for longevity . So they do not get warranty claims, Also for marketing reasons .Many cars and vans in the same range from the same manufacturer will have the same engine installed , but to push it up 'the food chain' in a 'better' model that they can charge more money for the same engine unit will miraculously provide more power and torque than the model below it. This magic trick is often just a software change in the ECU but can also involve different fuel injectors (easily done on the production line) and a few other inexpensive tweaks.
This obviously leaves room for someone with the tools and the know how to re-programme the 'weaker' engine helping it realise it's true potential.

Some engines respond very well to ECU upgrades , others less so.

So seeking expert advice is a good plan if you thing your car might be suitable for a 're map' . I have not had any work done by MSL but they are held in high regard on this forum, give them a call. Let us know how you get on.:thumb:

Thanks that's some good info there, I come from the land of MG where everything was stretched to the limit usually. Will contact MSL after Christmas.

As an update apparently a remap will give around 45/50 bhp and 70 lbs ft of torque, further benefits of a remap includes smoother faster gear changes, increased torque limiters and overall better drive-ability. With a dyno run £450 without £350. What is putting me off is that warranty will be void if MB find out and I still have over 2 years left. :(

Just picking up on this old thread. I'm intending to by a 2014 C200 so I contacted MSL and they said this was a difficult engine to tune and I would likely only see 10-20 BHP gains safely. Others have said it's no problem to get 50 bhp plus.

So the W205 C200 184bhp can get up to 250bhp with a stage 1 remap, i.e. same running gear, this from a number of Mercedes specialists. Am looking to get mine done shortly. Have not come across the warnings you mention and it is a well bedded in engine that Mercedes also use in the W205 C300, just with a different state of tune and head.

I thought the C200 was a mild hybrid and the c300 isn't. Doesn't that make a difference to tuning? Obviously, I know nothing about tuning but I'm curious :)

I'd trust MSL on this. The M274 engine isn't easy to tune. Neither was its predecessor, the M271, BTW.

Never say never, but I'd be very dubious of any claim to get over 25% more power from an N/A engine with nothing more than a remap. MSL are well-respected for a reason...

Ask if they will give you a dyno sheet with power and torque curves for your specific engine, on the day, both before and after the remap. If not, draw your own conclusions.

The M274 has a Turbocharger, but it's a small highly-stressed engine. It needs hardware upgrades for a significant improvement in power and torque.

The 2016 c200 is not an N/A engine. It has a turbo. But I've had conflicting advice and seen it on youtube. Some say safely 10bhp increase but many others say the engine is identical to the C300 254bhp but with a lesser tune, as others have stated here.

He may have found that out in the intervening 2 years since the last post!!

I am not too familiar with the various factory tune levels of the M274 engines, but just to say that you should not assume that the difference between the US C300 and the UK C200 is only software.

You'll need to Google it further to find out the full list of differences, but again it is unlikely to be only down to software (mapping).

I'm also far from an expert on cars but its just what I've read and been told. I found it hard to believe that a tune would be the only difference but while trying to find out if that is true I couldn't find anything stating that there were mechanical differences. I thought there would at least be a turbo upgrade or something else. Gonna keep looking but a few articles say its a common thing now just do that companies can release another model with maybe a few interior/exterior extras too and charge more 🤷🏻‍♂️
Hope you didnt feel like I was critical of your post. I've only had my C200 a few weeks and been reading up a lot on it 👍🏼

Small correction ... the C300 at that time was 242 bhp. It did go up to 254 bhp in the 2018 facelift, but using a different engine (M264).
