Ace Gearboxes Ltd in Northampton, I'm looking for somewhere reasonably local that can overhaul mine, I'm not sure if this is the best way to go and looking for advice please.

Hi,
ACE Gearboxes have been going for well over 20 years, having said that, I have never used them. However a phone call to describe your symptoms to them should get you a rough estimate.
Is the car a keeper, or are you going to move it on in the near future? The cost implications between a rebuild and a used box from a breaker may need to be taken into consideration. Do not forget also to budget for a new Clutch Assembly and Thrust bearing as it would be prudent to replace those items at the same time when the box is out.
I notice also you have a separate thread enquiring about the rebuild of a Back Axle. What other problems does your car have? Would you consider buying a good donor car to strip out the parts? Just a thought if you have the space. My thought processes are that if you have a back axle problem, there may be damage also to the half shafts, and bearing damage. The list goes on and on and the £££££'s mount up.

Steve.

Thank you Steve,
I should have said the 190 is an automatic and I read that the Ace company mend the axles so hence why I was asking, it has had a good report from the mechanic I now use as he checked it all over, the only problem is the hum to the rear, the door cards and the wing mirrors, it could use the bonnet and one door being worked on but on the whole it is very good for its age.

How bad is the hum from the rear (assuming it's a sound, not the smell of a dismembered body in the boot...)? Noisy rear axles can go on for a very long time, and an oil additive might help to quieten it down.

Personally it is driving me nuts  but the mechanic said he can hear a faint hum, he put some additive in and said I need to run it a while to see if there is any difference, sadly, I don't tend to do things by half and I do find it loud, it's a noise that should not be there and I'd really like it gone, and no bodies in the boot :D

Most W201 190s have some degree of diff whine. I wouldn’t rush into it - ‘they all do that’. If your mechanic isn’t greatly concerned I wouldn’t be for the moment, until you know the rest of the car is sound and that it’s a keeper :)

The classic differential noise is from the crown and pinion gears on the overrun [on lifting off the throttle]when the wheels are driving the transmission rather than the other way round. This is due to the preload on the differential pinion bearings being slightly out, allowing slight play. As already said its fairly common and unless the noise is excessive is nothing to worry about. A constant noise under load or overrun is more likely to be the diff carrier bearings.
