Hi there, I have a 2001 W463 G400 CDI.

Its been great, but its developed a really odd fault. Someone on here is bound to have seen it before, but it has me totally stumped.

Long and short, when I come to it in the morning it refuses to turn over, displaying the TC in neutral error with no ratio selection in the dash.

After usually around 10 minutes of having the ignition on, you can turn it back off, try again and bingo, it doesnt display the error and will start as normal.

However it is prone to throwing up all sorts of errors, such as
Failing to charge
Undervoltage consumers

It all started with seeing this error and nothing else, so I replaced the alternator and battery. That was the start of a deep and detailed look at it, so here is what I have learnt...

  1. I have an Icarsoft scanner, when I plug it in with TC in Neutral the scanner cannot contact the following modules, TCM (Transmission control module), ESM (electronic selector module), TC (Transfer Case)
  2. When left for 10 mins or so these modules are contactable and have no faults to read.
  3. There are a number of CAN bus errors within the syetem, but all are marked historic.
  4. Once started it has sometimes come up with an error saying not charging, this carries on for a few minutes, but always picks back up to normal (13.8v) charging.

I can list all the separate errors, but I honestly think I have a relay or SAM module fault maybe.

Does anyone have any ideas? Any pointers?

One thing I have noticed is that I cannot contact the Electronic ignition switch at any point and interrogate it for faults, I can see the module, but it comes up with no link. It may be nothing, but I thought worth mentioning!

Fingers crossed someone can assist, its baffled one specialist for a while...

Many thanks for looking, any help much appreciated!

A few more points,

If I come back to it after an hour, the process starts all over again, if its just a few minutes it is generally perfect.

Its almost like something is going to sleep and not waking, or at least taking a while to get going

Once it picks up all the modules on the scanner I dont have any problems with it

Its come to the point where I carry the scanner plugged in to check it over!

Has anyone ever seen this before, I am hoping so!
