Hi,

As the title suggests my dads car developed an oil leak last week it's a Mercedes A150, he took it to one of his mates who's a mechanic and was told the timing belt tensioner is f****d. Upon closer inspection he said the timing chain tensioner has been grinding away at the engine block and it's going to require the engine to be taken out completely and sent off to some specialist to have it grinded down and then a new timing tensioner installed. Not sure how true what he is saying is but he's telling us it's gonna cost upwards of £800 to £1000 which we simply can't afford.

I know this is a shot in the dark but does anyone know of any good mechanics in the Leicester area who would take on this kind of work?

My dad uses the cars for deliveries so he really needs it back up and running ASAP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you considered enquiring bout having it trailered down? Wouldn't be that costly

Not to sound rude or unappreciative but we are trying to keep costs down as much as possible as finances really aren't great at the moment. Somebody in Leicester would be ideal providing we haven't already been to them, most people don't want to touch the car because they keep saying the engine needs to be taken out and it's too labour intensive.

I understand the need to keep costs down but if you are looking at circa £1k it wouldn't hurt to enquire from Jay the approx costs, including transportation? Even if only to get a quote from a Merc specialist, it may point to the realistic costs of repair?

yes i see what you mean gonna give a try. In the meantime if anyone else can help please let me know.

Thanks

I think you need to find a local engine rebuild specialist not a Merc specialist. Not being rude, but it's not an AMG. Google is your friend.

Personally I wouldn't drive a car with timing chain issue one mile, in fact I wouldn't try and start the engine again. I think that whatever solution you are considering, towing the car away or transporting it on a low loader must be part of it.

(I bent 2 valves on a 1.8L Alfa engine in 1985, and totalled a Ford 1.8L Diesel engine in 1997 - lesson learnt)

Go to MB automotive in loughborough.
Did my timing chain for an excellent price. I also use them for servicing. VERY honest guys and wont do work unless they are 100% sure it needs doing.

My last "A" service for my om651 C250 cdi was £150.

Google them MB automotive loughborough.

ps I not affiliated to them, just basing this review on my own experience.

Definitely gonna give these guys a call and see if they can do the work. You said they did you timing chain for you, if you don't mind me asking how much did they charge?

Thanks

They are pretty busy but fitted me in no problem. I actually left my car with them over night as they wanted to hear mine start up from cold a couple of times to make sure they were confident it was the chain. No charge for that.
I had the chain and tensioner done for £721 from memory ( or very close to that figure)
They use genuine merc parts as the main merc dealer is only a 2min walk away form them.

They are all ex merc main dealer mechanics and I was impressed at their knowledge. They told me they had bought specilist tools from the USA for my engine as they had done a few now. It cut the cost of the work right down as the engine didnt need to be removed.
They know their stuff.

let me know how you get on.
