The Vito passed it's MOT today, no issues.
While in the air I get the chance to have a good nosey at the underside.
All looks good under there apart from,
at the rear I can see some rust on the box section sub frame. Up here (Buxton) rust can be a n issue so I would like to attack it preventionwise.

Rather than grind down to metal, that sometimes can get out of hand, I'm wondering is there a product that has been proven to turn turn the rust to whatever chemically?

Years ago I remember products that claimed to, but are they all snake oil?

Using a chemical will stop the rust from spreading, however unless you grind/cut it out. It will return.

You could use a spot blaster if you've got a good compressor. Alternatively wire wheel as much rust off as you can and use POR 15 paint. Dries as hard as nails. I painted some panels 10 or more years ago and they are still totally rust free. Obviously won't prevent rusting from inside out, the only way to prevent that would be to remove the subframe, if it's removable, get it chemically dipped and electrophoretically coated then powder coated inside and out. I've done this but it's a lot of work.

Stopping, or slowing its advance is all I hope for.
As said I can't tell if there is any rust from the inside, by taking too much off the outside I might advance the meeting in the middle scenario.

I'll scrap, wire brush, and even grind where there is easy access to the crusty stuff.
The brake pipes are surprisingly healthy, but I usually wire wool those prior to painting, and paint again prior to MOT.

I'm not intending strip down work.
I would favour painting with silver caliper paint after treatment, I've found it superior to Hammerite. Silver doesn't disguise rust so it can be seen when it returns.

I'll look into both products suggested,
thanks.

You can get rid of the surface rust with a wire brush . I find a product that every one uses on the Land Rover forum the name if i can get it right is ------METALMORPHOSIS ... And coat the part treated after with a good coat of paint and wax oil You can find this on ebay under rust converter or as i said before the Land Rover Blog I have used this so many times with good results. And this as reminded me that i need another bottle now.

Second the POR-15. Follow the steps properly (use the metal prep) and it works amazingly well. I painted the vulnerable bits under the 190 with the stuff about 5 years ago and it's still as it was when finished.

Oh and buy small tins and disposable brushes because it solidifies when opened. It's VERY messy.

I've used Geox Gel with success on a few things, worth a look.

Wear gloves as well! Whatever that stuff touches it sticks too :D

Hammerite do a range of rust cure / prevention products. I used some on metal gates years ago and it was effective...
