according to my brother in law you'll need to keep a plastic bag in the passenger footwell......every time you shut the doors a bit of trim will fall off so you can keep it safe in the plastic bag :)

He aso moaned about electrical gremlins, leaks, an engine that self destructed and a car that he can't sell despite having spent thousands putting it right.

I drove it once and found the seats hard and uncomfortable, visibility poor and then..........it broke down and we towed it back to his place with our W124

Would I buy one? absolutely not

Honest John rates them quite well. Here's a list of his top 10 luxury cars, 4 of which are Mercedes, but the XJ6 (94-97) is number 8.

A friend has an 1995 XJR and has owned a Daimer 4.0, which is the same engine but non-supercharged. He rates the straight 6 engine more than the V8. though later V8's are more reliable. Rear wheel arch rust is an issue. Check all electronics. Gearboxes are sealed for life, but if the oil is never changed the gearbox is much more likely to fail.

Peterg1965 has recently bought a XJ6 and is looking to buy an XK8, so maybe if you PM him he'll have some top tips for you.

A friend had a V8 XJR fantastic machine but needed a new engine at about 80k miles - had bore wear I seem to recall. Initial symptom was a poor idle and it went down hill from there. I think Jag footed the bill but the car was only about 3 yrs old at the time.

This one has had the same, new engine paid by jag.

I have an XJ6 with XJR alloys, XJR Grille ! Trying to sell it, it's a good car, but not me! And it has the start of a bit of tin worm in the rear arches! Decided against the XK8 for a variety of reasons, may revisit that in a few years but now isn't the time for me.

I almost bought an XJ8 before I bought the CLK. From the research I did then, things to look out for were porous engines due to the use of Nikasil in cylinder linings (late 90s BMWs also suffered from this). The thing to do is to have a compression test done by Jaguar, and whilst I can't remember the exact figure, if it's above the number it's fine, if it's below you might have a problem.

That said, I also found out that the early V8s (97 to around 99) were not reliable, suffering the bore problems above, and other problems. The last of the 6 cylinders (like peterg's excellent looking example) were very well regarded and, based on anecdotal evidence, are very reliable.

At the time I was looking, a supercharged XJR was beyond my means, but what a car! I'd say it would be wise to check all the usual things, and to avoid a car that looks as though servicing and maintenance has been skimped on. These were £60K when new and had appropriately high running costs.

Fantastic choice of car though, good luck with your purchase. :)

Nikasil apparently plagued Jag V8s, as you said, in the late 90's, it was sorted by MY2000. A lot of early cars may well have replacement engines courtesy of Jaguar. It was to do with high Sulphur content of unleaded petrol reacting with the cylinder bore linings. Later engines had steel lined bores. The sulphur content in fuel has markedly reduced so the engines with Nikasil 'issues' should all have been identified by now. The test you refer to is called the 'blow by' test (I think) the result required is a figure of 20 or less.

EDIT. My Jaguar is being replaced by a 55 plate Skoda Superb 1.9 TDI. How the mighty have fallen! I suspect the Skoda will be a hugely better car though!

Peterg1965 that's a mighty nice looking Jag u have for sale. Would be very interested if it doesn't sell on Sunday. I love my Mercs but could be tempted by a Jag as nice as yours seems to be.

Nothing yet formally arranged for Sunday, it was a comment made by a prospective buyer but he hasn't got back to me yet, so you're welcome to come and see or make an offer anytime. PM me if you want more details, photos, I have loads of the inside too.

Thanks Peterg but don't think I've been active enough to have pm facility. Unfortunately I can't make it this weekend due to some other commitments but if it doesn't sell by next weekend I may be able to sort something out.

NEVER!

The Skoda will be reliable, economical and will get you from A to B. It will fulfil its role as transport to move you and your family around.

The Jag gives a sense of occasion. When you sink into those lovely leather armchairs and hear the muted roar from that straight six, it'll never fail to make you feel good or put a silly grin on your face. It's got character, and you may pay for this at the petrol pump or at the specialist service garage, but as I suspect most Mercedes owners will know and understand, there are some sacrfices worth making in life!
