Anyone know what this part is?

Hi All

whilst checking my engine bay today on our new 2000 ML270cdi I noticed a plug disconnected which fitted on this part directly above.

Does anyone know what part this is and what effect it not being plugged in has on the engine. It does seem a little more powerful not it has been reconnected but may be my imagination! its the part with the two pipes coming from it

Its on the drivers side of the engine, next to the air filter box

thanks, so it's not my imagination then, the car seems much more pokey now it's been reconnected.

I've done about 800 miles since buying the car with it not being connected.

I also had a gearbox service yesterday at mercland so both together make a different car
