Anyone near Middlesex who could/would go check out a used car for us?

So the lease costs £8,600 over three years, and at the end of that you've got nothing. Buy used for £2k - £3k, even spending another £2k on bills. Total cost £4k or £5k, and a residual of maybe £1k after 3 years.

Total cost £3k or £4k versus £8.5k. That's a lot of money for peace of mind. It would buy a few AA memberships!

To be fair we’ve looked into leasing and were more than happy to contribute to it. But daughter said she didn’t want her first car to be brand new. Great that she’s got her mothers brains and common sense.

Never understood the ‘you’ve got nothing at the end of it’ sort of view with leasing. You’re basically paying the depreciation and finance cost for the term. You’ve had your money’s worth.

Buy a new car for £15k and drive it for three years. Add the cost of interest on a loan (or lack of interest on your capital if you’re bought it yourself) and then sell the car for cash at the end of the term. Not likely to be much difference and sometimes lease deals work out cheaper.

Generally speaking, if you own or drive a new or newish car expect it to cost a fair chunk.

If you buy an older car, you either get lucky or sometimes unlucky. You could easily spend more than the cost of a year’s leasing on a few larger repairs and maintenance items.

No right or wrong choice, it’s what you’re comfortable with at the end of the day and suits your needs/budget :)

Absolutely. We’ve leased 3 cars over the years and didn’t regret any of them. Get the right deal and it’s great value.

The best was a brand new 2016 E220d Auto saloon. Metallic paint, premium plus pack and £250pm over 2 years. No service required as I simply sent it back a week before its 1st one was due. No new tyres needed either. Road tax was included in the deal. Basically fuel and insurance.

At the time a friend was paying the same per month for 2 iPhones and 2 Apple Watches for him and his misses. We had an E Class Merc. 🥳

Around £8k including the deposit but still cheaper than buying new and selling 2 years later.

Yeah I’ve only leased one car (an Audi A4 cabriolet about twenty years ago) but it was a decent enough car on a 2-year deal and similarly to your E-class cost me next to nothing as it was all brand new and included road tax.

I was busy at the time working and renovating a house I’d just bought so the Audi was a hassle free thing to just drive.

If I’d bought it for cash and sold it after 2-years it would have cost more than the lease payments (£200 odd a month)

Have never had a car on finance though, and usually I’ve owned older cars, but everyone’s needs and circumstances are different at different times in their lives :)

Imo the way used cars are at the moment I would spend around the £4k mark on something small less than 100k miles and around 6-8 years old
It's going to get dented scratched etc after all it's a 1st car no point leasing or buying new only to get bashed about

After extensive (obsessive?) research we collected a car from Edinburgh today.

2007 1.6 Mini Cooper with 34,606 miles. FSH. new MOT with zero advisories. 2 keys. Needs some TLC and a good clean. A fair few war wound’s but it’s mechanically sound and safe for our daughters first car.

Bus to Carlisle. Train to Edinburgh. Uber from station to the private sale. Took car for an MOT (last one was done in November with zero advisories) at D&G Autocare in Edinburgh. Passed again but well worth the money for peace of mind.

I’m buzzing about today. Love being with her. Chatted away all day long. Laughing and giggling like kids. Stopped off at a nice pub on the way home for a bite to eat. She’s a pleasure to be with. A day I’ll cherish forever. 🥰

I drove home. Quite a fun little car compared to our C Estate. Nice and smooth over the bumps. No rattles or worrying noises.

Wheels need refurbished but daughter isn’t bothered (for now). I need to chill out and let her enjoy.

Insurance was a mighty £1,411.00 on her own policy with a black box app. IMG_9265.jpeg

Heartwarming to hear about your outing with your Daughter and brings so many memories of similar days with mine.
Car looks great, the idea of immediate MOT is super sensible for POM when handing over the keys to such an important person. Her health to enjoy, upped my day reading. 😎

The day trip sounds even better than the car Ant. Well done to you both, enjoy 👍🏻

Daddy cool. Fandabbydozy

I’m not so sure Darrell. 🤷‍♂️

Who knows when the used car market will plummet? But at the mileage it’ll hopefully do her for a fair stint. 🤞
Not anytime soon Ant with the EV shemozzle slowing new ICE sales, and as Darrell said Mini’s are known to hold their money. 😎

A cool looking first car and a feelgood story into the bargain.
Doesn't get any better, does it?
